NLN today, need encouragement...

Nursing Students General Students

You know, I worked so hard for the past year on all the prerequisites to our local two year nursing program, and focused on each class with enthusiasm. I've been able to keep up a 4.0 GPA, and have been so excited about learning, but man, did I feel beat up after the NLN today. It was like being stuck with hot pokers for four hours, and my confidence went downhill from start to finish. By the end I was just filling in ovals so as to now leave any blanks. I'm floored it was so difficult for me, and am upset I didn't practice doing long math without a calculator in advance. I figured the hard part was knowing how to solve a word problem, not scratching out the math, which I haven't done since high school (a very, very long time ago). I hope this isn't it for me, since I loved, I said LOVED A&P, and the rest of the up-front work. This is my first post. I look forward to having discussions with you all through nursing school, and do hope I make the first cut for January despite what I think was probably a set-back.

The book I used to study that was sold in our bookstore, the study guide for nursing exams, prepared me for something more difficult. Especially the math. I was expecting every problem to be a word problem. Was I one happy clam to find out that only a few were word problems. I found the science section to be particularly challenging with its heavy content on general science and physics. I mean what the (*))#)#*( do I know about ohms or how fast sound travels in a closed environment?

AMEN, Kathy!

We must have used the same book. Although, I was kinda glad I was over prepared for the math. I was stressing over that & was RELIEVED to see that it was easier than I had thought.

The science section totally peeved me off. I wasn't prepared for all the physics questions. Holy cow. It's been 9-10 years since I had a physics class & I didn't understand any of it then. Most of the folks I talked to said they were surprised at all the physics questions too...I mean, why physics? I'm thinking biology/A&P...stuff like that. Ugh. Hopefully I did well enough to pass the dang thing.

Still waiting on my scores too. I took it on the 5th, so they should be here anytime. I hate waiting. :(

Hi KathyR, welcome to the board. :) I also waited by the mailbox yesterday only to find nothing. One of my friends got her results 3 days ago. Needless to say, her outcome was not as nice as your friends'. She was very sad, and I feel quite bad for her, as she's a smart girl, and will make a great nurse. Worst case is she (WE!) get in next fall, which I can deal with if I fare in a similar way. Good LUCK as you wait for your mail!

Thank you for the welcome Wendy. I was on mailbox watch this afternoon. The letter carrier was running late and I'm sick with some microbial thing so I skipped my art class. He didn't escape my eye. My highest hopes were eclipsed when I saw the 92% score. That's 10 beautiful nursing points. The highest expectation I had was 8 points with a probable 6. I do believe I can say with some degree of certainty that I will be starting my clinicals in January. It's just a matter of waiting for that "congratulations" package. I guess the studying did pay off.

Wow Kathy, CONGRATS! :balloons: You're amazing. I got mine too, and had hoped for a better result, but it could have been a LOT worse. I will be on the fence for Jan, based on last year's cut-off points, and I'd hoped to be well under it. I am proud anyhow. I've never had physics or biology in my life, and I did better than 91% in science. OTOH, I really blew math...but I have an excuse!!! I practiced with a calculator, and was DREADFULLY slow without it! I filled in a bunch of ovals at the end by way of 'guess'. During the summer I was trying SO HARD to finish the minimum prereq's, and managed to complete A&P I with lab, Basic Healthcare with lab, and HG&D, plus phlebotomy training at night, which left me little to no time at ALL for the NLN. Oh well, what's done is done. I did score 95% on my first attempt at the ProCalc today. It was easy. I hope I see you in Jan! Have fun if I don't! I'm JEALOUS!!!

:p (green with envy)

Kathy,

Congratulations! I also attend PBCC and took the NLN this past Saturday...walked in pretty confident walked out deflated!!! I was pretty nervous to begin with... but wow...I think I bombed it. Anyway, your message and outcome are terrific and gives me a little hope!!

Thanks friends for the congrats. I still feel it was a bit of a fluke but hey, I'll take it.

As for the total points, the spring class usually comes in at a lower number than the fall class. I got that info straight from the nursing office. Maybe that will hold true this year. I wish everyone luck.

Kathy:rolleyes:

awright, kathy! Woot! :D Congrats!
