Nasty clinical instructors

Nursing Students General Students

:angryfire Hey everyone,

I am a mature student RN/BScN - One of the young ladies in my clinical group from last semester had a horrible day in clinical today - she is a smart girl and nice too - today her clinical instructor chewed her out in front of a patient and another nursing student - even when people are making mistakes I have a HUGE problem with this type of thing. :angryfire The instructor in question is very high strung and rubbed me the wrong way the first time I met her.

I guess I just wanted to see who else has had this problem - the young lady was in tears to boot!!!! :angryfire :angryfire I am very protective of most of the girls I am training with because I have been there when I was very young too (I am an RPN).

Anyway, just wanted to vent cause I am mad and frustrated that there are still nursing teachers out there getting away with this kind of crap :angryfire

We had 2 instructors like that.

When Any of us would ask a question she would say "I'm not sure about that" or "I really don't know".....and it was on the test! Also, she was SOOOO prejudice!! She would deny it, but even previous graduates told us stories. So one day, while we were in lecture, she flipped out on a black girl who had asked her why she didn't know the answer, you are an RN-BSN and if it's on the test why can't you help us? Needless to say, she was out sick for 2 WEEKS because she was "sick".

The other one liked to play the "favorite" game. She had her 2 or 3 that would ace clinicals and always be team leaders, while the rest of us were stuck by ourselves(of course, our "team leaders" would be "helping the teacher").

I'm glad I'm done with school!

I so can't wait for this semester to end. One of our instructors is retiring and I swear she is trying to weed out as many people as possible this semester. Every little tiny nit picky thing on paperwork. It wouldn't be bad, but she's not consistent. What she accepts one day, she does not accept another. I'm too tired trying to figure her out.....

I had an instructor just like that. I said had...because unlike most of you brave souls...i just couldn't take the abuse (perfect description) she handed out, and so I quit my first semester...12 weeks in of 16 weeks! She wasn't American and constantly put down the American culture. I'm not American, and I was really offended! She trash-talked about the other instructors, and former students! She yelled at students in front of patients, staff and other students. It was so humiliating. I tried to talk to her about it, and she accused me of threatening her, because I said that I would report her to the school. Which I did, but they took her side! After I complained, I had to go to clinicals with her the next day, and she was so awful to me that I broke out in hives right in post-conference! I just couldn't go back the next day! I miss clinicals, the patients (such encouraging, amazing troupers!), and my fellow students. I plan to reapply, but to another school. The thought of crossing paths again with that evil she-devil turned me off of that school.

Wow! The level of unprofessionalism described in this thread is unreal! I haven't experienced this myself but I have heard stories likes this about clinical instructors at the school I attend. Fortunately my school is very receptive to feedback from the students and fired a clinical instructor for some of the behaviors described here.
