Hi All,

I am starting nursing school of fall 2016, what would be a perfect job? I know people recommend not to work.

Would a CNA job be okay?

Honestly, it really just depends on you. I'm in my second semester of a BSN program right now and have done just fine working a part-time job. I worked 9 hours a week last semester and I'm working 12 hours per week this semester. Some people can't handle working at all. With the scheduling, it's very difficult if not impossible to work full time. If you're 100% dedicated to nursing school and willing to make sacrifices, you might just be able to work part-time and do nursing school.

A job that offers a lot of flexibility & ability to work 'off hours' is best. Frankly, quite a few nursing students find that working as waitstaff is a good fit. It gives them a venue to perfect their 'people skills' like communication, along with time management & organization .... and they get tips! Many hospitals also have Patient Care Tech (PCT) jobs specifically for nursing students who have completed their first clinical semester. PCT jobs tend to be structured to compliment the academic schedule, so be on the lookout for one when you've gotten to that level.

I worked as a PRN CNA during nursing school. I was required to work 24 hours per month, and usually was able to work every other Sunday and avoid test weeks, which was really nice. It was great to have extra money and make an employment connection with a local hospital, but also I find I'm a better nurse today after working my butt off as a CNA.
