I need help with a little survey. I'm just curious about something. For those of you that have heard of the HESI test please reply. Can you tell me if it is a requirement to take the HESI test and if you take it and fail or you held back for doing so, or you and the instructors can just see what you and them need to focus on.

You don't have to give me your name, just list your school's name if you don't mind. My instructor tried to tell me today its like a common thing that schools are making this HESI test a requirement and with penalty if you don't pass.

Thanks for your time.

From what I'm understanding everyone that has answered said they have to do remediation, but are you actually held back or you can remediate on what you need to learn as you move forward.

At my school if you fail, the HESI...you are not penalized if you do not pass it. If you recieve an 85%+ you are rewarded with 5 bonus points. They just give it to us for the oppurtunity for a practice NCLEX. I think it is BS that a school would fail you for it. If you don't do well, then you wont do well on NCLEX....so work on it.

Thanks Stacey.. Before i sent this e-mail I had sent another one and people jumped all over me saying I was blessed to get an opportunity to take this test before I actually took the RN boards. Me and my classmates are not disputing that this is a good resourceful tool. We would enjoy the opportunity to take this test and find out not only our strenthgs and weaknesses but those of the instructors as well. We are in a 5 week program and thats stressful enough not to mention short notice of this HESI test with no preparation for it. We don't have any extra time to study because being on that 5 week deal you always start out in 4th gear!

My school just started using it this year. In fact, I took the HESI A2 today. It's my understanding that we are not required to pass any of the exams as a requirement for graduation. Of course, this could change since they just started using it this semester.

What state are you in Todd?

I go to school in Ohio. We take the HESI 2 times. The first time we take it is at the end of the first year (RN Program) and again at the end before graduation. The first time we took it you did not have to pass, but if you got an 85% or higher you got up to 5 extra credit points added to the final. The second test at the end is required to pass in order to graduate. You must make an 85% or higher to graduate or they make you take refresher courses to graduate.

The HESI is an NCLEX based test that tells you your "percentage" likelihood of passing boards. It is not really based on your correctly answered questions, it is an estimation of your ability to pass state boards. We took it on the computer (same way boards are given) and you get your grade immediately. We will take it again in March right before graduation. Last year eveyone passed it except for one student. She had to take extra classes.

It is designed to be very similar to the boards and it is really good experience for boards.

When I took it, there were 113 questions on it over everything we learned first year. 13 of those were "pilot" questions that didn't count towards your grade. They are testing the "all of the right answers" type of questions that states are going to be using.

So out of 100 counted points I think I missed 15 or so, and my percentage was 99.99% of passing boards. So it is really just a predictor of passing boards. Hope this helps.
