How do you find a Preceptor?

A friend of mine told me today that we have to find our own preceptor. So how does one go about doing this? Someone else told me schools assign a preceptor in a field you choose. I know this will all be explained to me when class starts but I'm to curious to wait. Do hospitals offer preceptorships like internships?

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

Our school assigns us preceptors so I am not sure.........have you tried talking to anyone in the program now that might be able to help?

Someone will read your post soon that might be able to help.

Best wishes to you.

Our school also assigns us a preceptorship in the area of our choice, I can't imagine having to find your own preceptor, seems like it would be difficult because they have to be approved by both your school and the hospital, sorry, no help from me.

Specializes in Emergency.

when I was in school they assigned me a preceptor. many states offer internships just before you graduate from school. preceptor and internship are 2 different things though.

if you have to find your own preceptor, then find a nurse that you like/respect that you've worked clinicals with. that would be my suggestion.

how far are you from graduation?

Jen:o

this will be my last semester then I go to the preceptor.

Specializes in Neuro, Critical Care.

After this semester I graduate (our school is so small that we can only have one grad. for grad and undergrad) and then I think I have to go back for a 6 week seminar then 6 weeks (40hrs/wk) we have to do our preceptorship. I asked last semester and we get to pick our own area of interest/hospital and preceptor if we have one in mind. OUr teachers have told us to precept at the hospital/area that we would like to work bc most l ikely they will hire us on. I am thinking about either ER or ICU. I have an old clinical instructor in mind.

i start my preceptorship thursday

im excited but very nervous

Neuro ICU here i come

We listed 2 areas of interest and were assigned a preceptor in one of those areas. The hospital and school had to approve the preceptor first. I'm in a BSN program, so it requires we precept with a BSN nurse or ADN nurse & have a BSN co-preceptor to sign papers and evaluate us.

Specializes in Cardiac.

If we wanted/knew someone then we could list them as a preceptor. Otherwise we could have our school choose one for us. Either way.
