Hope all who had clinicals this week had good experiences. i did. we just did our midsemester switch, and i went from med/surg in a tiny hospital 30 miles away to the vascular pcu this week in a major level 1 trauma center thank goodness is a 10 minute drive from my door to the parking garage.

our clinicals are 2 days a week now (3rd semester ADN) and i had a patient who was post op from a hemicolectomy/ileostomy placement. I helped her iwth her first post op ambulation and subsequent ambulations, did PCA teaching (she was reluctant to push button even when in pain), removed her Foley and did more teaching about urination and how to use bedpan/get to bedside commode (she was concerned she'd urinate on herself), encouraged her b/c she was worried she wasn't progressing, did all of the documentation on her,I&O etc. (well am care and linen changes in there, too)

she thanked me for helping her and giving her the extra push, which made me all happy. its so great to know you did some good for someone.

hope you all had good experiences this week

Sounds like you had a good week, Rose. :)

I have peds this term, so Friday will be the first day we venture out from the 2 fairly small community hospitals where we've had clinicals so far to a much larger university-affiliated Children's Hospital. It will be quite a switch, and the first time I've care for children as a student. I'll let ya know how it goes...

peds is fun :) i did my peds clinicals a few weeks ago, had one patient with sate IV neuroblastoma, one with Evan's syndrome (which i had never heard of before). i played monopoly iwht the older one, lol. it was much more laid back here, b/c the kids need the play therapy. can be hard if you don't like to see kids sick or hurt, but in general, i had fun b/c the kids have such good spirits.

you'll either love it or hate it-i hopeyou love it!

This is my first semester of clinicals, so we're on a med surg floor in a small hospital. Been to clinical two days this week and one more to go. Taking care of a relatively young post-op patient - getting to do my first injections, have done about 3 sterile dressing changes, changed lots of sheets, helped give lots of baths (including several to a 655 lb gentleman), given lots of PO meds, and done a little computer charting.

Maybe not anything too interesting for those of you further along in school than me, but I'm having a great time... now if it just wasn't for all this darned paperwork! :chuckle

Monday I was in the nursery, I've been waiting all semester to be in there! I got to see my first delivery, it totally grossed me out and I never want kids :chuckle . There were 4 babies born within a 3 hour time span, so the nursery was going nuts. I did some erythromycin and Vitamin K shots (poor little babies) and some assessments. There were also about 11 babies on the other side of the nursery who were born within the past few days. They only had one aide over there trying to weigh/feed/change them all so I went over and helped her. I held the tiniest little baby and fed him, he was so sweet. I love the babies, so that was a really good night. I didn't even have time for a break, it was nonstop! I love that.

Tonight I'm supposed to be in clinical but I went (despite the fact that all day I've been rushing to and from the bathroom on the verge of throwing up) and told her how I've been feeling and she sent me home. Didn't want me to be around the kids. I hate missing clinical, but I really do feel horrible. My mom's had the stomach bug lately so I supposed I've been blessed...

Specializes in Adult Med-Surg, Rehab, and Ambulatory Care.

I have no good stories. LOL I stayed busy, though. What did I do today? Hrm... changed a few abdominal incision dsgs and some on stage 2-3 heel ulcers (we're doing our clinicals on a renal floor; lots of diabetic neuropathy and foot ulcers abound), also a sterile TLC dsg, flushed an NG tube, hung some antibiotics, gave several heparin and insulin shots and a ton of po meds, emptied a few foleys, d/c'd an IV, cleaned up lots of poop and did a little patient teaching. Answered the call bell a lot. Busy work. :) 3 o'clock was here before I knew it!
