federal loans 2nd bachelor's

Hi,

I'm looking to begin an absn program in the Fall and i've recently graduated from a 4 year institution with a ba in a non-nursing field. my concerns are in relation to tuition and financial aid. I have accrued about $23,000 in loans for my first degree (majority of the reason being that i dormed all four years) and the tuition for the program that I am looking at is about 32,000. I am still considered as a dependent and so based on the aggregate loan limit would I not be eligible for anymore federal loans and would have to get a private loan? also, how would I be able to change my dependency status in order to eligible for a higher loan limit amount? Thanks!

Uhhhh I know how you feel!

i would have to have waited another 2 years to apply, gotten married, had kids, or taken my parents to court to claim they abandoned or abused me to get a second bachelors at a reasonable loan rate! Enter the direct entry MSN degree. Pretty sure it was made for people like us. As a graduate student, you are automatically independent, regardless of all other factors. Not saying you should change your plans, just that I feel your pain!

I'm also starting an ABNS program this Fall with almost the same cost as your program. I'm classified as independent but I didn't received enough FAFSA loans to pay for my tuition (less than haft of the tuition) so I had to get a private loan to cover for the rest:(. Since you were born after January 1st, 1991, you are classified as dependent and the amount you get for federal loan will depend of your parents income. You are most likely need to get a private loan to cover the rest of your tuition :uhoh3:. I know it sucks but there are good private loans out there, you just need to shop around. Good luck

lol! this is my exact situation and mindset! If only I was born earlier! and the criteria needed in order to do a dependent override or w/e is basically impossible for me so that's not an option =( I was also thinking really hard about doing a direct entry program partially b/c of this. It'll take longer but it may be worth it? Also, the debate between doing a direct entry msn program or an absn program is constantly on my mind. Idk how I feel about receiving a higher level degree in something i've never done before

thank you for this! I'll start shopping around for private loans since it seems that's what i'll end up with lol.

Does anyone know if I turn 23 in December would I be able to update my FAFSA for the spring 2015 semester or does the FAFSA I filled out in January count for the Fall 2014-Spring 2015 and you can't make corrections?

You are not considered a dependant for Financial Aid purposes if you have a Bachelor's degree.

That's not true. check this link: https://studentaid.ed.gov/es/sites/default/files/fafsa-dependency.pdf

Unfortunately, The FAFSA that you filled out in Jan. counts for Fall '14-Spring '15 and You only can update or make corrections on your FAFSA if you get pregnant, married, or become the legal guardian of someone. You must wait until next year cycle to become independent. You can always call your school financial aid office or visit the link below for more information.

Yeah I know that stress all too well. Lol. I had just turned 23 in December and I did my FAFSA in April. Yeah when I answered my questions at one point they were like, hey you can claim yourself as independent this year based on your responses, so I went that route because my parents were taking a while to do their taxes and I was starting school soon.
