does it matter where I take pre-reqs?

Nursing Students General Students

I'm about to graduate with my BA in Gender Studies and Anthro, and my next plan is to go to nursing school. Not sure whether I'll purse an ADN, ABSN or Direct Entry MSN, but in any case, I still have to do basically all of the pre-reqs (between 14 and 26 credits for the programs I'm interested in).

That said, how much does it matter which school I take these pre-reqs at? I have the option to take a few community college classes online this summer (stats and nutrition) but I've heard conflicting opinions about whether or not this is a good idea. As long as I do well in the courses, credits are credits, right?

Any advice about my next move would be greatly appreciated!

Community colleges are often cheaper and you can save a bundle by doing pre-reqs there rather than a university.

The only factor that affects where you should do these pre-reqs would be the college/university you plan to attend. If they have any specific restrictions in regard to prerequisite courses (i.e. must be a accredited school, must be taken through their university, etc.) then you'll want to know before you take classes elsewhere. Usually calling the admissions department of the universities or colleges you plan to attend will get you these answers. In general, you're right that basic pre-reqs like algebra, english, statistics, chemistry can be completed almost anywhere.

As a side note, it would be an inefficient use of time and money for you to get an ADN given that you already have a BA. A BSN is the preferred degree for nurses and many hospitals/facilities are only hiring nursing with a Bachelors. An ABSN program would be about the same amount of time, and the payoff would be greater.

Make sure the college you want to transfer the credits to, will accept credits from the school where you will earn them.

Also, some schools require that you take pre-reqs there rather than somewhere else, once you're signed up as a pre-nursing student. Check that out too.
