These type questions will be on our next med exam, and we have not even gone over how to do them, so anyone please show me an easy way to do these. Thanks!

ORDER: Add 5 mEq of KCL to each 1000 ml IV. ON HAND: 20 mEq/10 ml. How many ml of KCL should be added per liter?

I guess I would start by figuring out how many mEq/ml. It would be 2.0 mEq/ml. So if you need 5mEq, then you would need 2.5 mL. Add 2.5ml of KCl solution to the 1,000ml bag.

That's my answer. But you should wait for other replies. Math was never my best subject! :uhoh21:

start with what is ordered. 5 meq of KCL per liter(1000mL). now, you need to figure out how to get that 5 meq's in there. you see that what you have on hand is a solution that is 20meq/10ML. the way i learned it is D/H *Q. desired(meq's/mg's/etc ordered-5 in this case) over have(what meq's/mgs/etc you have-20 in this case) times quantity(how much your "have" is in. 10ML in this case. b/c it said 20meq's in 10ml's)

so, d/h first. you desire 5, you have 20. 5/20. reduced to 1/4, or since i like decimals, 0.25 then, you take that and multiply it by Q. so, 0.25 * 10. so, 2.5 is your answer. you need to add 2.5ML's into the 1000ML bag to get your 5 meq per liter.

Proportions, on hand 20meq/10ml : desired 5meq so just go 20meq/10ml : 5meq/xml and cross multiply = 20x : 50 and then divide by 20 (divide 50 by 20 to get 2.5 ml.
