Curious about catheters

Hello everyone I am a pre nursing student who is obsessed with this forum lol. I can't wait to become a nurse however my body cringes at the thought of inserting a catheter. Can anybody share their first time doing that procedure?

Doing a foley on a woman---move the labia and look for the "bunt cake" sounds funny but that's what I look for. LOL

Specializes in Pedi.

In school, women in labor are good to cath if they've had an epidural. They can't feel anything down there and if they need to go from labor to C-section they'll usually put in a foley right before they take them in. That's how I learned in school at least. As with any skill in nursing, it's something you get better with over time. Little baby girls are tricky. With a woman, if you miss the first time and it goes into the lady parts, LEAVE that one in and aim higher. Some people have very funky anatomy... you just get used to it.
