Can you go from RN student to LPN?

I need some expert advice, please. I'm having a dilema and don't know what to do. All I have ever wanted since deciding to pursue nursing a few years ago (but delayed school because of new baby), is to work in LTC with the elderly. Well, I'm finishing up my Freshman year in an RN program and am making mostly Bs, but the longer I'm in school, the more I think that I DON'T want to be an RN. I've heard that in nursing homes, there's usually just one, maybe two RNs, and they rarely have patient contact - mostly paperwork in an office. And from what I've seen so far in clinicals at the hospitals, the RNs are stretched too thin to have much one-to-one interaction with the patients for more than just a couple of minutes. I simply just want to take care of the elderly, get to know them, keep them clean, make them smile, and pass meds and such as needed. So my question is, has anyone ever heard of switching over to LPN, and if so, what is involved? My fear is that none of my Freshman year would transfer and I will have wasted all of that time and money just to start over from the beginning in an LPN program.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Thank you so much for your input, everyone! It's nice to know that I do have options, just need to decide which way to go. You all are wonderful!

Thanks, again!

I am from Wisconsin, but yeah after the first year of clinicals, if all co-req's are done you can sit for the LPN boards.

Same for Iowa :)
