Hello,

I am planning to take my NCLEX-RN. Currently; I have DACA status.

However, I've been hearing a lot of different stuff.

Some people say I won't be able to get a license because I am not a US citizen, nor permanent resident.

Can anyone help me answer my question.

Yes u can't get a license because u need a ssn but u can endorse to other state if u pass the nclex.

Not in CA an application without a valid SSN or ITIN will be rejected. Officially you need to have legal status in the US to gain a professional license

Hi if I'm not mistaken coz my husband took nclex in CA state passed it BUT he can't get his license because he doesn't have SSN but he does have ITIN (which he cant use to get his license in CA either so he endorse his license to Michigan state and gets his license.

An ITIN will get you access to the nclex but not a license. DACA are often not eligible for an ITIN and therefore ineligible for CA

But when he took the nclex back then he doesnt have yet the ITIN but he got his eligibility to take nclex in 2008 in CA state. He just got his itin just last year. I have also friends who took the CA nclex but they never had the license coz they are not US citizen.

@justBeachyNurse now I'm more confused, kindly correct me if im wrong but alot of my friends and classmates from Philippines took their Nclex in CA state without an ITIN. What is difference of DACA and foreign test taker in Philippines? How come filipino can be eligible to take it while the DACA cannot? I remember my husband got his eligibility to sit in nclex with no problem. The problem just arise when he cannot get a license ID coz he need to have a valid SSN.

There is the difference. CA mandated the use of a SSN around 2009. The ITIN could be used starting earlier this year. The SSN requirement for a professional license has been a federal requirement for at least 5 years now. Not all states have implemented this. This was not the situation when your husband applied.

Dozens of Filipino nurses post in the nurse registration forum that they lost all fees as CA rejected their application without a valid SSN

Many DACA holders have work permits with SSN. If this is the case the OP can apply to CA. If they don't have a work permit with their DACA status they are out of luck. (Not al DACA have SSN/work permits)

Your husband applied before CA mandated that a SSN was required to even apply for a nursing license by examination or application. Many other states like VT & NJ have the same mandate.

In 2009 CA BRN stopped accepting license applications without a valid SSN. Your husband applied before that mandate. If he had failed and reapplied he'd have been denied

Thanks for clarification now it makes sense since without having SSN how can CA accept it to begin with since they cannot get a license without having SSN even you pass ur nclex before they implement that last 2009.

Some DACA recipients have an SSN so I wouldn't say that's much of the concern if that's your case. However, the NCLEX-Rn requires a non-expired ID to which the authorization card card grants 2-yr eligibility to stay in the US. Many posts of expereince say they are turned down because of that. There have been cases in which some DACA recepients were able to take the test, mentioning to show your passport. Though, DACA recepients don't recieve U.S. Passport, only of the country of their origin.

Guys im in the state of NEW MEXICO and about to finish my LPN. I also have daca. Anybody know if I will be able to test for that license? Thank you so much guys
