Aural learning style and a bad teacher

Nursing Students General Students

Hi everyone!

I'm a first semester student, and I have a problem. I learn best by listening and my teacher refuses to go through the power points and explain everything. She focuses on group activities and personal examples. Every time I leave the classroom I feel I didn't learn anything!

I already talked to the college's retention specialist and explained my situation, but nothing can be done. Please I need advice!

What can I do to succeed in this class (Fundamentals of nursing) without a teacher? Because I really feel that way. I feel I am teaching myself by reading the textbook. But I'm auditory!!!

Sharpeimon, thank you very much for your advice and for sharing such an interesting story. Your story demonstrates that people DO have different learning styles and while anybody can read, not everybody is able to comprehend fully what they are reading and integrate all the information efficiently. Your husband sounds like an amazing educator, both knowledgeable and caring. I feel sorry about the guy in your story, and i completely understand where he is coming from. I can read a chapter 3-4 times, but I can't seem to grasp the general idea unless someone explains it to me verbally.

The first day of class the faculty made us take a VARK questionnaire, so they know what are the learning styles of each student. I'm the only auditory in my class. I will follow your advice, and I will talk to her. And I'm tape recording the classes, but if she does not cover the material during class, then it's the same as nothing. I will definitely find some audio resources to help me study.

Thank you again for your helpful post!

I was in a similar situation as you once, but it was for a physics class. I thought her powerpoints were very short and I had a hard time understanding her. I talked to her after class and told her that I was having trouble so she tried helping me by re explaining it one on one. I still couldn't get it. Other students did fine, but I ended up looking elsewhere for help. I went on various websites and youtubed lectures and found that to be more beneficial. I didn't even bother opening up my book Except to solve problems and by the time we had our first exam, I scored a 99/100. The rest of the semester I basically taught myself physics. Try seeing if you can get some one on one help with her, some teachers can be very good at breaking things down if you visit during office hours. If that doesn't work, see if you can get into study groups so that as you or others speak it out loud, you can take notes and that might help. Also, try looking up lectures on YouTube. There are many professors that have their lectures recorded, or they will make some kind of video related to your topics. Hope it helps and best of luck!

Thank u jeyelala. I'm glad you were able to find what works for you:-) I will definitely search YouTube for nursing lectures...what a great idea!
