Any advice for a prospective nursing student????

After attending community college for 3 semesters, I've finally figured out that I want to become a nurse. Unfortunately, I don't have the specific core classes that I need (they're all different at each university's nursing program!!!!!). So it'll be awhile before I can even get into a program and that's only if I'm accepted. Does anyone out there have any advice to make my transition a little easier? At the university of Colorado I can transfer the summer of 2005 w/o any nursing experience and end up with a bachelors degree in two years. Should I wait for that or try to get a LPN or ADN degree right now? Sorry this message is so long, I'm just completely lost! Any advice would be great!

You like everyone else have to start with the Nursing Core Sciences.

My advice to you, with 3 Libral Arts semesters under your belt, go the BSN route.

Take the sciences and combind with your currents credit, apply to what we call in Florida "upper Division" in a Senior institution.

Take the Nursing credits as 300 and 400 level. You will find your 3 semesters were time well spent and an investment that will pay off.

Check NCLEX pass rates for schools. Hopefully your Board of Nursing has it posted on their website.

It helped me decide to go ADN since the BSN program in my area had a ten percent lower pass NCLEX rate.

If possible, try to find out what your local hospitals prefer as well. In my area, the hospital I want to work for prefers ADNs because they have more clinical experience.

Of course, this just applies to my area, and the schools and hospitals could be totally different in your area.

Thanks for the advice. No one has even mentioned that to me before. I'll definately look into it.

I may stand alone when I suggest this, but consider it because i am in a similar position as you. I have more than enough credits to have a general AA but I have moved around and the requirements vary at every school. I have all but a couple of core requirements. It took me quite some time to figure out I want to be a nurse. I live in Central Florida and UCF is accepting applications for their BSN beinning in 2006 right NOW!!! can u imagine???? With that kind of wait, I have no choice but to explore other options. My options are LPN and ASN. The good news is once u do go on to BSN, u will have many credits out of the way, the bad news is it doesnt offer any benefit immediately. I am accepted into an LPN program starting in July 04, and Im also applying to an ADN program (in february) that begins in August 04. I have a good chance of getting accepted into the ADN program as well, but I will cross that bridge when and if it comes. The up side is if I become an LPN I can work for a little while, gaining experience and then bridge over to RN. And then go for my BSN. However, Ive also heard but have yet to confirm u can challenge the LPN boards in the middle of RN school. If this is true, I will go the second route.

In your case, I think u can already be an LPN come 2005 if u find a program starting soon, and get advanced placement in the BSN program. Just my .02 though! good luck no matter what!
