ACEN vs CCNE

Hey all!

Wondering if anyone could help me with my questions before I go asking my teachers.

What's the difference between the ACEN and the CCNE when it comes to accreditation. One of the schools I'm looking at is accredited by the ACEN, but not the CCNE. Does this make a difference nationally? My real question is, would my credits transfer and will I get a job outside of the state, where my program is.

I appreciate anyone taking the time out to answer!!

Either one is fine. ACEN (used to be NLN) are both Specialty Accreditation agencies for nursing education. ACEN accredits all types of nursing education programs, including LP/VN. Diploma & ADN. CCNE only accredits BSN & above. Nursing programs also have to be approved by the state (usually the BON, but there are a couple of exceptions). NOTE: LV/PN programs are approved by their respective state and rarely accredited unless they are part of a college articulation program.

But neither of those specialty accreditations will ensure that your credits will transfer - that is determined by (academic) regional accreditation. I know it's confusing. HERE is actually a web site with a listing of all the regional, national & specialty accreditation agencies recognized by the US Department of Education.

Bottom line - if your program is accredited by ACNE or CCNE & the school has regional accreditation, you'll be fine.
