    Back to the topic at hand...I feel that even an experienced nurse should have more than a couple shifts worth of orientation to a population s/he's never worked with. I had been a nurse for 4 years, I even had experience with babies, but I sure got 5 weeks of orientation before they threw me out by myself on OB/antepartum/nursery. Just my $.02. Either way, best of luck to your friend.
    Not my friend, I was responding to the post as well:spin:. I would want more time with them personally. Too scary to work in any situation right off of the rack, no matter how experienced we may be. Sometimes, though, unfortunately, most nurses are usually thrown into situations whether we are ready or not. :angryfire

    If management isn't going to support this new employee now (by giving her a couple of extra orientation shifts for the peds patients), how much support will she be able to expect later when she has a problem (any problem)?

    I would run far and fast from this job.
