just got a call- someone called in on our med/surg unit so they need help tonight and tomorrow night (12 hr shift). is it wrong to say i'll do it if i get time and a half? i like to try the question just for the heck of it. once my manager replied, sorry there's no money in the budget for that. bullc**p, i thought. once the supervisor (desperate?) said sure without hesitation.

we have a sign up sheet if you want to be on-call- it's just for the weekend- the hardest time to find coverage. if you get called in it's time and a half but it can be either of our two m/s floors. but the problem is noone signs up. noone wants to work med-surg!!! anyway, i wasn't scheduled this weekend, kind of looking forward to being with the family but i think i'd work for time and a half. just wondering what is standard pay in other hospitals for those who fill-in.

I don't get OT until I work 40 hours. Depending on how badly they need us, we might also get a $100 bonus - Sometimes. If I'm called off my vacation, it is all OT with bonus. But this has never happend. It is policy not to call people on vacation. But it is there if they need to use it.

Count yourselves lucky. We still have mandatory OT. Yeah, it's OT and we can usually get the next scheduled shift off if it's just 8 hours later. But it's hard doing forced doubles. :(

Just give me the extra hours at regular pay. I don't care so long as I'm fresh and sharp for the extra time, and so long as I'm not going to compromise being fresh and sharp on the next scheduled shift. And of course so long as my social director hasn't committed me in writing on the kitchen calendar. Goodwill is bonus enough for me.
