Urgent: Mom is having shoulder, arm pains

Hi there,

I live a couple of thousand miles from my mom, who I have learned is having shoulder (all the way across), neck and bilateral arm pains. This has been going on for a couple of days. She is overweight, under stress and doesn't eat well. I've asked her to go to urgent care now, or, at least to her doctor's tomorrow.

She has done nothing out of the ordinary to cause this pain and she took a Vicodin to relive it, but to no avail. The only inordinate factor is that my sister was away for a bit.

As far as her history, I know she has HTN, not diabetic, post menopausal (she's 65) doesn't drink more than a beer a week, if that, she is SOB most times with mild exertion, and will deny anything I've stated thus far.

I'm worried. Do I need to do more?

Thanks for all replies.

:chuckle Tell your mom she has nurses and nursing students from across the globe rooting for her ! Let us know whats up !

Hopefully I wasn't misunderstood... my post was not directed to "ole folks" specifically, just many people in general seem to have that misguided expectation that if they don't tell us stuff in the ED we won't make them stay, or that if something is truly wrong, we should be able to find it no matter what history is given. I reread my post and didn't see anything directed to a certain age group...

I wanted to make sure I let you know I also am thinking of your Mom, and hoping all is well. Funny, when it's one of your own, there's a part of you that seems to forget about being a nurse and "knowing what you know". Instead, you just become like the rest of the family, (at least I do sometimes!) and let your mind run wild with thoughts of what could be. Funny, when I am looking at the chart, (my parents' and hubby's MD's write in orders that I may have free access to chart at anytime I request) my mind goes back to normal and my imagination gets reeled in. :rotfl: I am so glad that your Mom was admitted for further testing, and getting what she needs. If she gives you a time about being there, you can tell her what I tell alot of my patients "at least when you go home you will know what WASN'T the problem (ie your heart), and be able to rest easy and not worry yourself silly over it. Because if it was, and you didn't do anything before things got bad, you (or insert any other relative's name here, like Dad,)probably wouldn't forgive yourself (or themselves) if it was ignored. Usually "soothes the savage patient" for me! :) Anyway, good luck and hoping all is still well. Make sure you sleep... and not stay up all night worrying...
