Unemployed for 18 months now.......

Nurses General Nursing

I have been unemployed for 18 months now and it seems like every interview I go to, it seems very positive, then a week or two later I get a rejection email or phone call :(

I left my last job as a Public Health Nurse due to an emergency surgery that took my out of commission for several months. I LOVED my position and had only been there 8 months. It was my first real RN position since graduating from nursing school. I function better as a clinic/doctor's office setting nurse vs. hospital.

I am just depressed, expenses are piling up. Any advice? I know the only thing I can do is keep applying and interviewing. Will it ever end?!? :shy:

if your Filipino.. you can apply in Lung center of the Philippines.. they recently post a nursing job recently.. u might want to apply there..

or maybe try to send your CV to other field first for at least 6 months or less while waiting for position in the hospital.. but keep in mind that your main purpose is for you to have income to pay for your expenses or for you to save..

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.
Also another thought is did your last job let you go bc of the surgery and missed days? If they did and think you may have been discriminated against file a complaint with the EEOCC no comant likes to see them coming.

The EEOC deals with discrimination against protected classes: race, gender, age, etc.

Sadly, neither new graduates nor surgical patients are in themselves protected classes.

She is free to file a complaint, of course, but unless there's something she hasn't told us, I honestly don't see her complaint going anywhere.

About the EEOC: Overview

I was a Public Health Nurse-meaning I worked at a county health department :) As for leaving my job, it was recommended that I resign by my manager due to my illness and my imminent surgery. I was physically unable to perform and did miss some days right before I did resign. My manager understood that it was not possible for me to continue on. My references are people that want to give future employers good feedback...I keep in touch with them regularly and they are ready to assist me.

I am applying to clinics/doctors offices.....they are better suited for me vs. hospital. My illness has resolved thanks to surgery and I am ready to get back out there and make a difference. I am not picky and apply to any/every opportunity in those areas that I see. Part time would be fine as long as I can eventually have an opportunity for the position to go full time...also applying to full tile positions as well.

I dont believe in just "dropping in" as was mentioned. I believe that isn't appropriate.

I know that it will probably happen for me when I least expect it and I am fully prepared to explain to any employer why I left my position after only 8 months. All I can do is keep applying, remain positive and hope :)

I have been seeking a permanent nursing position for almost 3 years now....only found per diem and one job the state closed up the facility.....it was a nightmare.....I am LTC/Subacute RN and have been for 19 years.....I dont know if you have any other letters after your lpn or Rn letters but that does matter too....I DONT..and I am in the same spot as you...my credit card bills are all overdue...I had to move out to another state into my brothers home...its a mess my life.....I just keep putting the resumes out there...I even show up at places but they turn me away with me holding my resume in hand...because all is done on the computer...IT SUCKS big time...sorry...Hope I didnt break any guidelines in All Nurses...but I cannot afford going back to school and are just about buying groceries and paying my cell phone bill. So...Believe me I can relate to your plight...good luck....
