Tardiness...

Nurses General Nursing

I'm not one to come here and b***h, but I just need some feedback on this one, please.

I don't know if any of you have had this problem where you're employed, but I would like to know if a person comes to work late, say anywhere from 15 min to over an hour, how does your facility handle this? Do they dock your pay? And is it pretty much the same for all of your shifts?

The reason I ask is because on our shift which is 12mn-8am, the supervisor calls each floor and asks, " What is your census?, who all is there?" ( meaning the staff). If someone isn't in yet, they are to call the supervisor when they arrive, explain why they are late and then the super docks them for the amt of time they are late. I have no problem with that. The thing that irks me is that it's not done on every shift. Alot of the day shifters come in late and no one is EVER docked, including the head nurse! The supervisor for the day shift calls the unit and tells them to send one NA, or a LPN or RN to wherever, but never asks if anyone is late. Afternoons, I'm really not sure about. One morning, the supervisor sat in the lobby of the nursing home and observed that out of 75 employees that were due in at 7:30, only 15 of them came to work on time, and only 2 were marked down as being late. Talk about fraud! People were being payed for not being at work and nothing was done about it. Our 6am nurse ALWAYS comes to work at least 20-30 min. late every day, and I blame the nurse in charge for not marking her late...she doesn't want to "make waves" and is afraid of retaliation.

I don't think it's fair that other people on other shifts can get away with being late all of the time and the midnight shift seems to be the only shift that NEVER gets away with it. Why do you suppose that is???

In my unit we all just got nastygrams on our lockers from our boss. The clock in times for 1st shift is from 0638 to 0652 without being docked. Our new manager has decided that if we clock in after 0645, we are late. Some of us got notes for clocking in at 0646. Never mind all the OT and extra work we have picked up (notice the past tense) to balance the 1 minute late clock in time! I know people who come to work 15-20 minutes early, clock in on time, and spend the NEXT 15 minutes visiting!! Gripes me to no end!! I would rather someone be 5 minutes late getting there and who comes immediately for report than someone who is 1/2 hour early but still fails to come for report on time. I have actually gone to the main nurses' station and told the oncoming nurse I was going home at a quarter past the hour regardless. That usually moves them. I can't believe that there are places that don't have time clocks!! Our swipe cards are programmed to clock us in our "usual" department. There is a sequence on numbers to key in if you are going to another department. Our facility uses Kronos. I guess that system is easier than using the traditional punch type cards. I am glad I don't have to do payroll!! What a nightmare!!

Unfortunately, I am one of the tardies...as I write, I am facing a 1 day suspension (here in FL, we call it a 'Disney Day') to decide if I want to continue at the hosp. I was 2 minutes late Christmas morning, working with pneumonia & contused ribs from a fall 3 days earlier (not making excuses, it just took a little longer than usual to put on my socks :(.

We have a time clock (badge swipe) and one minute after 0645 = tardy! This is counted by payroll and given to the supervisors every month, and disciplines are followed strictly (in 12 months, 10 = oral warning, 11 = written, 12 = disney day off, 13 = termination.

It is an ongoing record so they 'fall off' as the time goes by, if you can 'stay clean'.

I have some ambivilent feelings about this policy. Yes I realize I am late...but nothing is said to the ones who clock in early (no $ for this) but still are not ready for report until 10-15 mins after 0645. If I'm 1 min late, I'm in my seat for face to face report in 2 mins with paper/pen in hand, not running around socializing and b****ing about my assignment.

OR there are those who drive up to the ramp at the employee entrance, jump out and clock in, then go park their cars. This REALLY pisses me off!!! They are 'on time' on paper but certainly minutes late for report! I can only report them if I can get to the clock & see the name before someone else clocks in. Then, it's only my word against theirs.

Sorry for the moaning, but I am in trouble and am just venting. It is my responsibilty to make sure I keep my job; I know the rules.

The original poster of the subject really needs to get this addressed. Leaving it go really raises bitterness

and resentment. Do something about it now, upfront or anonymously, but DO something!!!

Being "Tardy",God I hate that term,is relative where I work.

I wont go into details, but tardy for one is not tardy for another
