Putting RN on license plate???

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Can anyone tell me if you are legally or ethically bound to stop at an accident scene if you put RN on your plates? I stop when I can but I don't stop if it is just me and my 5 year old in the car. I would like to personalize my plates as long as there isn't any legal implication tied into it. Any links would be much appreciated.

as someone else already asked, why would you want to do that? when you go someplace and need some type of service they will charge you more money because they think you have it. and, nurses are easy prey for criminals. people like to get nurses. i would not do this. but if you must, go ahead. just remember that you were warned.

I thought of putting RN on my license plate for a long time but haven't come around to it as yet, but I think regardless of putting RN on your license plate or not - stopping at an accident depends of how much help you can be, ex: a Trauma Care Nurse would be better experience to handle an accident that a med-surg nurse. Won't you say! I work in the Med-Surg Ocn area for over 3 yrs and I don't think I would be helpful. I may have to step back and let PMS do their thing. My conclusion is stopping at an accident depends on what you think you can do.:twocents:

I attended an inservice training on personal protection and the police warned against this practice. They sited a history of violence against nurses. They warned us not to hang our stethoscopes from the rearview mirror and not to identify ourselves as nurses on the car. They also said to NEVER stop and pull over if someone tells us we have a flat tire or hit us from behind. They said to drive to the nearest police station. Evidently nurses are preyed upon by criminals, and they specifically mentioned the 3-11p shift nurses being at most risk because they are driving home in the dark. Something to consider.

I agree 100% with this advice and a good guideline for safety for nurses is not to advertise that I am a nurse. I do have stethoscopes in the car all the time. Funny once when I stopped in the mall very quickly to get a gift certificate right inside the front door, I had my little dog with me...when I came out there were two girls in a broken down car parked near my car. They said they were watching the mall parking lot for people that leave their animals in the car...and noticed my stethoscope and asked how a nurse could ever do that....So I guess people do notice. They were strange, and must have gotten out of their car to see the stethoscope as it was on the back seat. Of course I wouldn't leave my dog in the car for any length of time, I love my little dog. The point is they noticed, they were stranger than fiction, and they noticed.
