PRN and working FT

Hi all - just looking for an outsiders perspective on an opportunity that came up!

Currently I work 3 12hr day shifts on a busy inpt med/surg floor. I've been doing this 3.5+ years. Hospital nursing is burning me out so I've been looking for other avenues to pursue.

I had applied for an outpatient endoscopy full time job and had a great interview. I've been looking into this for some time as the scheduling is great and it's the perfect mix (for me) of acuity and skills but without all the psychosocial/insurance/etc of hospital work. They did tell me that they filled the FT spot but were still interested and offered me PRN position in the mean time, with potential for FT at some point.

My question is does PRN work out for you guys? I'm a little concerned about the orientation period as I would have to work a little more during that time to train on top of my shifts at the hospital. I understand and would never want to compromise my hospital job during this time. After orientation the commitment is 1-2 shifts a month. Is it best practice to let your supervisor know that you will be starting a PRN job? I've heard mixed opinions on that. Any other advice or tips?

The FT job is supposed to take precedence so I generally would not let them know. It may be unavoidable depending on how your schedule is done.
