I am a PhD candidate in Australia and I am studying how people respond to wrongdoing (e.g., bullying, abuse of power, sexual harassment, fraud, deliberate negligence, theft, sabotage) in organizational settings. After some recent whistle-blowing episodes in Australian hospitals, I am particularly interested in hearing from healthcare professionals, and I have already conducted interviews with nurses and doctors.
Following these interviews, the next stage of my research involves collecting survey data. The anonymous survey
is open to employees around the world who have come across any form of wrongdoing in their organization (i.e, targets, observers, and those who have been informed about wrongdoing from others) and takes around 20 minutes to complete. It does not matter how you responded to the wrongdoing; currently, I have received responses from people who remained silent about the wrongdoing, confronted the perpetrator, reported to management, exited the organization, etc.
In contrast to much of the previous field research which has focused on the consequences of the wrongdoing, my research examines the decision-making process and organizational and contextual factors that affect how people respond. This is a significant gap in the literature, and the findings of the study will not only provide insights into the experiences of those who come across or experience wrongdoing, but will also provide organizations with information about how to deal with wrongdoing and address complaints appropriately.
