I work on an orthopedics med/surg floor in a hospital and one day I was assigned to be a Safety Champion for this slightly confused elderly women. The family was in there and the lady slept most of the time so I had time to make small talk with the family. Well the hospital d/c the need for the champion that same day but the patient ended up staying at the hospital for about a week now. Everyday I worked I had her as one of my patients. Yesterday the patient's family offered me a job as a prn Home Health aid or in their words "My mom's babysitter". My question is, How do I even go about having a self employed Home health job? Would being paid under the table be acceptable? Is there any legal contracts that should be made? Any kind of insurance needed or tax forms? I'm completely baffled by this concept for I never considered home health before.

As a Babysitter? These are typically paid under the table types of jobs. Why wouldn't it be acceptable? Would you expect to pay taxes or sign legal contracts for babysitting someones child? Why should it be any different for an elderly person? Be clear that you are not offering medical services. Ensure that you are paid at least once a week to an agreed upon amount or you don't return. If they seem shady, don't agree to work for them.

They seem very legit, they hired home health aid before. But as long as Im just there to make sure the lady can safely ambulate around her home and I assist her with just the adls. I would be considered a sitter correct? I feel like I completely made this more complicated. Thanks for your response!
