Is nursing ruining your love life?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am working 12 hour night shifts and feel like I am too exhausted to spend any "quality time" with my husband because work is taking so much out of me. Is there anyone else out there that feels my pain? It was bad enough going through nursing school. the long hours I had to stay up studying and could never come to bed or participate in anything fun, or any family activities. Now that I am working it's no better. I feel like when i get days off i have to catch up on sleep and I am not in the mood for anything. It's really ruining my relationship and my husband is getting fed up. Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm single and trying to date while working nights. It sucks bad because the guy I'm dating works 7-4 M-F. I really like this guy and want to date him more, but we have not been able to see each other for over a week due to the difference in our schedules. I do the schedule mentioned where I sleep from 9am - 2pm on my days off and try to flip back to a more normal schedule on my days off, but flipping back and forth every 2 or 3 days is driving me NUTS! I put in a request for days; God knows I don't want to work days due to the craziness that occurs on that shift but my profession is not worth my personal life.

I also do not pick up shifts, volunteer for commitees (as they always meet at 9 or 10am on my days off or on a day that I have to go back to work that night), or in general get involved with my hospital other than the 3 nights a week I have to be there for work. It's kind of depressing because I wanted to be more involved, but I can barley do all the things I need to do for me because I'm exhausted all the time.

The advice of leaving work at work is a great one also. I go to work do the best I can and then I leave. I don't care how screwed up my charting is or what paper work I may or may not have filled out properly. If someone wants my license they can have it. I'm going to take the absolute best care of my patients as I can and give the most complete report to the on comming nurse as possible and that's as far as I go. My hosptial is so unorganized that you can ask 10 of the head honchos the same question and get hugely different answers. I don't know who is right or the 'proper' way to do anything and don't even get me started with their so call procedures...sometimes there are just to many people and to much input....the KISS method is really not imployed at all were I work. Thus I document how I want and do dressing changes and other procedures as I remember learning in school or by how ever one of the other nurses show me.

haha yes cause I'm moving 300 miles away:))

man i didn't realize so many people were going through the same thing. and for me, throw two kids in the mix (a 7 year old and a 4 year old) and there's really no time for my relationship. we originally decided to work opposite shifts so we wouldn't have to pay for daycare but it's really hard not being able to go to bed with your significant other.

On top of that my bofriend thinks I will be rich and stuck up..hahahah. He actually told me today I will flaunt the money to his face hahah..

Blackheartednurse, are you moving away because you could only find a job far away or is this your choice?
