Management with Healthcare Adm Degree

Hello I am new here and this may even be my first post. I have been snooping around since 2010. Lol! This website has been a driving force with helping me to finally start my prerequisites for the nursing program. So thanks so much for your encouragement. I have a degree in Healthcare Administration. I have yet to get a job where I can utilize this degree. I am going to school for my ADN and I was wondering if my degree in Healthcare Adm would help me in getting a management position.

I know you guys have said in order to get further you need a BSN but what about my situation. If anyone has any idea please advise me on this. I am starting late in nursing and really don't want to be in school any longer than I have to. I know that sounds bad but I' m getting older and just want to be a nurse.

Nursing administration is somewhat different than the broader "healthcare admin" in that it usually requires bedside nursing experience (of at least 2-3 years in specialty) AND at least a bachelor's degree (which doesn't necessarily have to be in nursing).

So, if your HCA degree is a bachelor's or, better yet, a master's, it is likely to fulfill the degree requirement for most nursing management positions. But, you will still need to work as a bedside RN for a few years before really qualifying for the job. This bedside experience is invaluable for anyone interested in nursing management roles.

There are some exceptions to the experience rule. Apparently, some nursing homes seem to be willing to hire new grad RNs into management positions- but accepting one of those jobs without experience would mean putting your nursing license at great risk.

Good luck

Tswim thanks for your feedback.
