male versus female nursing wages?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi,

I have to do a paper in my statistics class in which we must find something that we are interested in, take numbers from it, and relate it to statistics. Since I am going into nursing, and I am male, I've often heard criticism that male nurses make more than female nurses despite the fact that it is a female dominated profession. I figured I would use that subject for my paper. I work at the hospital, but I'm only a unit clerk (not a nurse yet), and I didn't want to go around asking all of the nurses at work what their wages were because they're pretty much my friends and I didn't want to seem rude. So I figured the web is the best place to ask people embarrasing questions.

In other words:

1) what is your gender? (male/female)

2) what is your hourly rate?

Thank you!

It depends on location, the type of nursing you're doing, and how long you've been there.

Someone earlier mentioned that he job paid less than her husband's. But it may be that since she's in one area and he's in a hospital, there is just a difference in the wage scale, not necessarily that he's male and she's female. Hospitals do traditionally pay more than other types of faciltiies, have a need for 24/7 staff and probably need more people to fill in slots for overtime. Definitely more than a doctor's office. I don't know many people in home health in this area who get overtime and nights. Holidays and weekends, usually they do for some patients who need daily nursing care.

Some LTCs may pay more than a hospital, some less. And geographically, there is a very wide range of salaries.

Silly Me! Here I go thinking that my pay was based upon performance (not gender or race). Performance is defined as the ability to provide the product or service I am paid to provide as outlined in my job description.

I guess this explains why professional female models make more money (on average) than professional male models even though they essentially provide the same product or service.

I guess I should just seek positions where my gender is rewarded and not performance. I wouldn't have to work as hard.
