How do you build up stamina for 12 hr shifts?

Ok, I'm a student, and just did my first 12 hr shift. I am embarrassed to say how absolutely fatigued I felt after this. I am just dragging the next day also. My entire BODY just was sore and my feet were on fire from all the standing and walking all day on a med/surg floor. :o (whine)

What are some tips from RNs on how to get through days like this, how to build stamina to pull these shifts?

Admittedly, I am older, in my 40's, but as a mom of three, I thought I was stronger than this. :uhoh3:

Try not to schedule three or more shifts in a row, it's a killer. I just worked last Fri Sat Sun. off Mon Tues and worked Wed Thurs Fri. I'm useless today. I did not schedule myself this way, mind you. This is why I am going part time. I can't handle the full time 12 hr schedle anymore, no matter how well I take care of myself. The emotional and physical stress is overwhelming.

I am a 40 year old female.

Make sure you eat healthy, and exercise, it really really does help. I find I have more energy and get through the whole shift better if I'm sticking to my walking/biking regimen.

I'm 33 years old and I work 12 hour night shifts in the ICU. I love them! For me the time goes so fast, I come home and crash for a few hours and am good to go for the next night.
