holiday pay

I work in an ICU in a for profit hospital. I think we have the worst holiday pay. First of all we only get two paid holidays a year and those are Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. The pay is from 00:01 to 11:59 pm. I work night shift so for instance when I worked on Thanksgiving I only got paid until midnight, not my entire shift. Our pay is only $5 more per hour. Even Starbucks pays their employees time and a half on holidays and they get all the major holidays. I complained to our ceo about it and he gave me some bs about how the pay is comparable to other hospitals, etc. I really don't believe that. Plus we are required to sign up for holiday shifts even though they aren't paid holidays. So for instance I had to sign up to work either new years eve or new years day but I will not be paid holiday pay for it. Anyway, I was just wondering what every other hospital does because I don't believe my ceo for a minute that the holiday pay is comparable to other hospitals. :o

We get 3 holidays paid at time and a half: Thanksgiving, Xmas and New Years Day. Then we get $2.00 more on 3 others: like Labor Day, 4th of July.

I had to post again. I can't believe how many of you folks have awful holiday policy/pay. The $2 more an hour on the other 3 holidays--wow a whole $16 extra dollars for an 8-hour shift so after taxes that's probably about ten whole dollars--that's awful. I'm not making fun of it--just can't believe it--that's really more an insult.

We get 12 paid holidays. No extra pay for working holidays, though. If we work it, we get to take it later, usually when we request it. Or if we quit, we get paid for our saved holidays then.

Ideally, we'd get double time on the major holidays and maybe time and a half for lesser ones.

As for why nurses put up with the low pay and benefits that aren't good - we are mostly women, mostly passive, mostly not willing to risk getting fired by speaking out. We have to have our income, most of us are not working for the fun, we work to survive and are scared to organize and unite and demand our due. :o

We don't get any holiday pay at all, I was led to believe that this was the standard....and we are required to work 3/5 major holidays including thanksgiving, Christmas eve, Christmas day, new years eve, new years day

That's interesting that your employer actally calls the Eve's holidays. Anywhere I've ever worked, including religious hospitals, never called Christmas EVE a holiday, and definitely never NY EVE. Always just the Day.
