Health care on the reservation truly shocking

i have always volunteered my time and skills when i have been able to do so. nowhere have i had a greater pull towards than the rosebud & pine ridge reservations in south dakota. i plan someday to find a way to assemble a team of medical volunteers to offer healthcare to the people of those areas... the level of healthcare that they deserve. not just for a day or a week or a month, but for a few years. long enough to help combat the serious health issues nai's face that often go untreated... alcoholism, mental health, obesity, diabetes...

maybe it's a dream, but someday i hope to somehow in someway make a difference for the lakota people in sd.

it really makes me sick to think that this sort of thing is allowed in this country. the conditions under which so many nai's are subjected to live seem so farfetched to the people who drive around in their nice shiny new bmw's and drive home to their multi-million dollar homes. how could there be such a huge socioeconomic divide? how could people only a few miles away live in homes with dirt floors when others get marble imported from italy to adorn their foyers? it's hard to wrap your brain around such a thing... to acknowledge how terribly wrong the government has treated the nai's. and how it continues to this day...

i know it happens to everyday to all kinds of people, but this is personal. i know i am only one person, but if enough people made enough of an effort to work towards positive change i believe something really good could come of it.

if filmmaker michael moore really wanted to shock the world about the lack of health care in the united states, he should have taken his film crew to an indian reservation for scenes in his recent documentary “sicko.”

imagine avis littlewind, a 14-year-old who was lying curled in the fetal position for 90 days before killing herself because no treatment center existed to help her.

on wednesday, the senate committee on indian affairs held a field hearing on the crow reservation to collect testimony from native people suffering at the hands of the indian health service, which is funded at barely half of its need.

Me Gwitch(thanks), I just get tired, I want the best for the tribe et for my kids, all the kids in every tribe.

Braveheart,

I have had recruiters who say there is a great demand for nurses on NAI reservations. I wanted so badly to go work on one and give back to them like the rest of you. I think it's an attrocity (Sp?) to see what is happening to our TRUE Americans. Hopefully after my son graduates from high school in a couple of years, but right now he is living with his Dad in TN and that prevents me from just picking up my bags and heading west young girl.

qpelf;

totally understood. I miss so much the time I spent on the reservations. I would love to go back, I get very homesick for it. But it is no place to raise my daughter even though she is 1/2 Lakota. The amount of child molestation that goes on there is huge. Practically every kid I know has been molested.And the so many kids start using drugs and alcolhol very young,babies having babies, many gangs , and many deaths starting young. Thats the downside(a big one) The positive of it is the tribal culture and a very simplistic lifestyle. whatever little people have, is shared. Always being treated like family whether related or not. Its a very close knit tribal community. The Spirit of the Land is very strong, alive and well. This is something that is more difficult to feel back east. Probably because of all the fast pace commotion. Boy do I miss the land. I am looking forward to moving back in that direction ,not on the rez, but close enough to visit.My daughter and myself, well, we both need the contact. Good luck to you .

That's all any of us should want for our children. And we, who are not full blooded American Indian from any tribe should be remembering why we are celebrating Thanksgiving. If it had not been for our Native American brothers, who trusted us before we pushed them farther and farther away from THEIR land, then the early settlers would have starved. All I can say is this..... I am so sorry that the conditions like they are for you. If I could make it better single handedly, I would. We allow for better care of our immigrants in the public health system than we do for those whose ancestors were here when this country was discovered. It makes me so sad to think of all we gave away to new immigrants when I did public health and yet the conditions are that bad on the reservations. As nurses, is there anyone we can fight to get help for the Native Americans??????????? Come on surely someone knows who to contact.

Well you could always contact IHS, but I think you already know they don't give a care. I think the only thing we can do is each go and work. Give of ourselves. Thats all I know to do.

I am a new L.P.N. 46 year old am planning to continue for my R.N. next year (2008) i would like to become a traveling nurse in the next 4 years . LPNinVA ; so here is a link for you. Porcupine Clinic on PineRidge Reservation needs volunteers. they are tribally run , meaning they get funding from donations and grants and its never enough, since they right now had to close because they are out of heat. Im sure they would love volunteer nurses, with the limited funding they have. heres the link;

I was born in SDak just outside the Pine Ridge reservation (we moved away when I was very small) and my parents still talk about how very sad it made them to see how NAIs were treated. That was almost 30 years ago; so very very sad to see that it is still happening.

wanted to do a quick post to let you all know, my job is set. i start work on the navajo reservation on dec. 10th at tuba city hospital er. i am currently raising funds to get me and my family there. i spoke to the knights of columbus tonight and they assured me they will provide help. i just don't know how much yet. also my recruiter found a 1 day pals povider course. i am worried. i do it this sat. i know pals is hard, even though i have acls and other advance courses, the med. calculations worry me. since it is normally a 2 day course, i will really have to cram, and i can't get the book until thursday. so please say a prayer and keep your fingers crossed for me that my mind is open and able to remember everything so i can pass.:chair: i will try to come back in before we go but we now have 12 days until i am supposed to show up to work! everything is happening very fast, i am very nervous moving my disabled mother, critical daughter,17mo son and myself to an area where i know no one. i am praying the navajo people will be kind, i really want to help and that comes out to those i care for. also wolfie, did chief thunderhawk say anything to you about his "tell me grandfather" program he really wanted to start, but could not find backing? he gave me the information and i have been talking to men in the nai communities i fo to about starting this program. they have said that if i will lead it they will donate their time to it. it is to help save the next generation. i want to start the program and name it after chief thunderhawk as a tribute to his life and work. so i am also going to start working on that soon after i get there. if you have any suggestions please letme know. gotta grab a little sleep.

good for you m.e. i worked on the navaho rz in ganado oh, about 17 yrs ago. you will love the people. i wouldnt worry about that. everyone is very friendly and helpful. are you working directly for tc facility or through travelers? ihs facilities will pay relocation costs, but if i remember , you have to work there for a certain amt of time before reimbursement is given. check into that. credit cards help in that case.

the travel agencies pick up all the relocation cost immediatly as you probably know and i think i saw the tuba city positions available on one of them ( i get tons of emails from travel agencies) you might want to go through them, they will make it alot easier. heres the link to the travel agency ,that had navajo area job openings
