As healthcare proffesionals, My nutrition class got me thinking as to how many of us follow or try to follow the new American food pyramid that came out last year. Not sure if this pyramid extends to other populations worldwide as I know Canada had its own pyramid until the present one.

Anyway she said this meal would bearing genetics etc would ward off most lifestyle diseases.

I sure know my daily intakes is a mile from this!

I know a big issue for me is getting my veggies and fruits as I have always not fancied their taste. I also come from a part of the world that has made love rice - by the way I got to have it at least once a day.

My fruits are almost always juices with no pulp. Big lover of ice-cream and the sweaties and fast food.

this is today

breakfast: yogurt smooth drink & granola bar

Lunch: peanut butter and jelly sandwich and granola bar

dinner: lunchable and one reeses peanut butter cup

that is a crappy example of my normal routine. I usually eat better (just a little).

Yeh, I remember in nursing school we had to follow a strict diabetic diet- getting in all the exchanges. We were taught that really ALL people should be on this type of balanced regimen, not just diabetics, and that it's a better guide than the pyramid. I also remember being amazed at how few fruits and veggies I really consume during a day and that overall I lacked balance and variety. It was a real eye opener as are most food journals.
