CORI and background check question

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a pre-nursing student. I have done my pre-reqs and am awaiting to hear from direct entry NP programs I've applied to. I'm beginning to worry though, becaue I do have something on my record. In '99 I wrote a check for 100.00 at my grocery store that bounced. I moved appts from RI to MA and closed that (RI) bank account right around that same time- so I didn't get the notice that it bounced until I got a call from my hometown police station saying they had a warrent! :uhoh21: I went to court and paid the 100 and a small fine on top of that. I don't think I was "convicted"- but I think it would show up on a background check. I've read the info on the MA BON site- and since it was more than 5 yrs ago and it wasn't an offense that would automatically disqualify me from a nursing license- I didn't think it would be an issue. Now I'm beginning to think about jobs that would also require a background check. Will this be a huge issue and impediment to a career in nursing? It seems like such a silly thing for a mistake from 6 yrs ago to prevent me from being a nurse...

Help please!

I went to California and did a walk through without realizing that I had a previous felony showing with fingerprints that happened 30 years ago. 1 am 48yrs old. never been finger printed before and after several request nothing showed up. It was not until after I got home that I was notified by cbon.I did not respond and my application was destroyed. It has been about 4 years and i want to go back to ca.Need to know who I can contact at the cbon before sending application. any help would be appreciated.THANKS SCARED TO REAPPLY

Here's some info from the CA BON website : http://www.rn.ca.gov/lic/lic-dispinfo.htm#1 I would email them or give them a call and just be as upfront and honest as possible. The email they give on the site for questions is [email protected]

Good luck!

Thanks For The Information, nursing Is What I Love. Dont Want To Think I Could Ever Loose My Career

Thanks begali for your post- I totally agree. Although I am totally ashamed that I will have to disclose this offense to the BON and probably my school too- there is no other option for me. I would never want to live with something like that lurking in my past just waiting to pop out and ruin my career because I was less than honest.

My issue is that I need a fairly strong assurance from my BON that my particular offense will not bar me from the NCLEX or being licensed *before* starting my program. I am not going to spend upwards of 40K on my graduate program-plus- childcare expenses for two kids (which will be equal to or greater than tuition itself) without being sure I will be able to sit for the NCLEX. I understand that the BON needs to review each case individually- but to me it would be unacceptable to invest my time and finances into becoming a nurse without a "guarantee" of sorts.

Does that make sense?

I don't think your school would have to know. I do think/know the board does.

Your school is only providing you with an education which you will pay for. The board is granting your licensure which "guarantees" you certain priviledges, for which they are putting a certain degree of trust and faith in you to preside over other people.

Tell your board...don't worry about your school.

I had a juvenile record which I petitioned successfully for it to be sealed when I became an adult. Now we all "know" that juvenile crimes can not be held against you as an adult right?? Right. However, because I'd still been fingerprinted, booked and convicted....though later the record sealed....I STILL let them know about it. I sent all the pertinent info and a letter which detailed my coming into my adult hood "rehabilitation".

By the way: what is pre-NP school??

To apply for licensure......the application states >> Have you ever been arrested? Tricky question. Be truthful.

Good luck

There was a student in my nursing class....that was not honest with his past (writing bad checks 5 yrs. ago) to the bon and they would not let him sit for the exam...If he had been honest, i believe he would have his license today.

His charges were misdemeanors.

See, this is what worries me. I mean, I guess I just have to trust the MA BON when they say I will be able to sit for the exam as long as I declare it and it isn't on the list of "permanently excluded" offenses. My situation is identical to this guy's only with me it was one check and that I don't plan to lie about it.

But how can you really know that he would have been able to sit of the exam if he had been honest, you know? I just worry that I will put a lot of time and money and sacrifice into schooling and then be turned down by the BON for NCLEX. I know it's not possible, but I want to go through the process now and get some letter or certification that I'll be allowed to sit for the exam.

Also, I think I would have to tell my school- because they run CORI checks for clinicals as well. So I wouldn't want them to have to contact me with a question on my CORI or risk getting kicked out of a clinical- I'd rather be upfront about it and hope that it won't be an issue.

Geez! One bad check- 6 years ago for $100. I never would have imagined it would cause these sort of problems. Ugh- I'm so bummed out.
