Adult Day Care

Nurses General Nursing

Hello everyone,

As a new grad registered nurse I am keeping my options open. I am not only looking for a hospital job.

That being said recently I have a job interview with an adult day care. I want to ask if anyone out there knows what it is like working in an adult day care as a nurse. What is the environment like?

How were you oriented into your position as a new grad nurse?

Hi

I work in an adult daycare.

I have no call lights and I never have to call doctors.

My admission paperwork? Hmmm... I fill out one sheet.

One. Sheet.

One.

I do vitals and chart once a month... it's brutal

I am required to go on all field trips

The place is small and the staff is very small. It's close knit and it can be like "Days of Our Lives", but everyone really really likes each other and the clients are truly well-cared for.

You will totally get to know and build rapport with your clients and their families.

HOWEVER, it may not be the greatest place for a new grad because that autonomy comes with a price. The price is being able to make judgement calls on your own... with no one else to go to for advice or help. You'll probably be the only nurse there... you are it.

Also, if you would like to work in a hospital later, daycare experience isn't going to do much for you by the way of experience.

BUT!!!! If you get a chance to get in and start working-- go for it. You can always keep it as a side job (I do).

Honestly, the nurses who get into the daycares around here never leave ;)

Not all daycares are the same, but this is my experience.

Good luck :)

P.S.

I had two days of training... that's all I needed.
