Hello All:

Since over 70% of RN's in California received their nursing degree from a Community College and for the majority this is their terminal degree, I am interested in starting an alumni group. Before I get into the details of what I have in mind, can anyone tell me if such an entity exists at their community college? I know there are groups (Sigma Theta Tau) for 4 year colleges, but I can't find mention in any state of a 2 year college having one.

Thanks!

Sigma Theta Tau isn't an alumni association but an honor society--think of it as Phi Beta Kappa (or Phi Theta Kappa) for nurses.

As I understand it, STTI is made up undergrad and grad students, as well as community members. Undergrads are invited to join in their last 2 semesters of school. Community members can apply for membership at anytime. Grad students need 12 units before they can apply. So there is an element of post graduation involvement. I'll be inducted in two weeks and learn more about it then.

There is a hefty fee to join the STTI community. I hope it will merit the investment. However, the minimum involvement is a BSN.

An Alumni group for ADN grads that provides:

• post-ADN grad mentors

• a fundraising vehicle

• set up discounts for NCLEX review classes

• opportunity to bring speakers

• provided leadership opportunities

• work with the nursing department to for supplementary learning opportunities.

• work with local non-profits, such as Red Cross to train for disaster deployment.

• Encourage continuing ADN grads to continue their educaiton

My school (community college) started one last year, I believe. They can use alumni to mentor & support new grads, provide scholarships, share job opportunities, etc.

They're even giving us the first year for free which is cool. They also have privileges like discounts on movie tickets & other stuff.

Thanks Soontobe.

Can you tell me the school. I'd like to see what they're doing.
