3pm-11pm shift duties for a Support (CNA)

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I just got hired as a support (instead of a sitter which I originally applied for) and I will be working the 3-11 shift. Anyone know what I would typically be doing during these hours? I know 7-3pm is busy because during my clinicals I would see the supports giving baths. I'm assuming during the 3-11pm shift there won't be a lot of baths being done? I don't mind doing bed baths, but I'm just curious. Hope someone can give me some info. Thanks!

At my hospital, 3-11 as a CNA goes something like this:

3:00 Get report and do rounds with off going CNA, get assignment sheet from nurse (has info on specific patient needs for the shift).

3:30 Do vitals on all patients.

4:00 Do chemstrips on patients who need it.

5:30 Pass dinner trays, feed patients who need it.

6:30 Collect dinner trays.

7:30 Start q4 hour vitals on patients who need it.

8:00 Start I/Os on all patients and refill water pitchers.

9:00 Do chemstrips on patients who need it.

9:30 Pass evening snacks.

Of course you are answering lights, changing people, collecting specimens, charting, discharging and admitting, etc in the midst of all the above as well. Breaks are not scheduled so when you have time you take one. Patients going for procedures (including dialysis) the next day are prepped on the 3-11 shift, that always means a bath but may also mean they need shaved as well. You'll also need to assist patients with any HS care they may need and that can start right after dinner depending on the patient. At the end of the shift you are also expected to clean the rooms (take out trash, remove extra linens, straighten up).

Thank you. This is exactly what I'm looking for :) I already know the job description of a CNA/Support. I just wanted to know what it's typically like on the 3-11p shift.
