USF applicants 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Anyone applying to USF's (University of South Florida) nursing program?. I feel discouraged because I heard how competitive and rigorous it is.I have a 3.7 GPA. finished about half of my pre-reqs, got A's in all of my science courses. A B in statistics, ethics, and humanities:sarcastic:. I'm currently an ambassador at a community college and volunteering at a hospital. If those aren't good enough to get in the program I don't know what will lol. Is anyone here a USF nursing student? I would love to hear your experiences. I hope I can at least get into USF or my community college. If those fail..then it's off to or technical for me!!

off topic but great weather we are having huh?? jeez we aren't even a week into hurricane season![/quote']

Lol I'm in Miami it's so hot here! My car feels like an oven and I feel I'm melting!

Ya great weather haha. Drove home from palm harbor, hour ride in pouring down rain. All day at work it was pretty bad too. God knows we need the rain though so no complaints here. I'm just glad it's not a drought. I heard a few tornadoes were out there earlier so try to stay safe everyone :)

also, my status changed to committee today :) waiting game continues, guys! try and keep your mind occupied until then. I'm doing my best lol

It's so hard my mind is so consumed with finding out if I got into USF or not. Ugh the wait is so agonizing!

I'm currently in my first semester of USF upper division program. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! :)

What was your overall and prereq gpa when you got accepted? How do you like it so far? How are the professors? Thanks :)

My overall gpa was a 3.75. I LOVE the program!! The professors are great, you learn so much and everything correlates together in all of your classes. I was matched with a clinical convenient for me but there is about 6-7 clinical sites scattered around Tampa/Clearwater/Sarasota area. It may be overwhelming the first couple of weeks prior to your very first exam for each of your classes. It's completely normal many if not all of your classmates will feel that way as well. Once you get through those first exams you will feel better control of where you need to make adjustments as far in your studying habits. In general, the professors are your best resource! they are ready and willing to assist you in any possible way.

Thanks mely29. Congratulations on getting into the program. We all have our fingers crossed here and the wait is very hard, which I'm sure you are very familiar with lol you've been through all that already :) I have a 3.85 overall and a 3.77 prereq gpa. I've heard very good things about the program and the school in general. Many students seem to love it at USF. I know this might be a tough question to answer since each professor has a different teaching style, but in general, how do you feel about the exam format? Are there many "trick" questions? Do professors mostly use PowerPoints in their lectures? I'm so used to them from A&P I and II, and from Micro. Not sure if nursing school professors use the same format. I find that PowerPoint makes it a little easier to follow along and is a good study tool. Thanks again for your help!

The exam questions are going to be a whole lot different than what you may be used to. The reason why the questions are different is because they prepare you for the NCLEX exam .There is going to be 2 correct answers but one is more correct than the other (if that makes sense). The professors will prepare you for these test. There aim is not to trick you, they simply want to help you succed in the outside nursing world but also help you pass that licensure exam. The professors use powerpoints for there lectures. I print them out prior to going to class because I feel more engaged that way. However, some students opt to take their laptops/tablets and take notes that way. You will power outlets on your desks to connect and charge them and your cellphones. DO record the lectures!! It works for me to listen to them while going through the same powerpoints presented in class. Based on your stats I believe you have a great chance in getting in. The essay is a vital part of the admission process. If you spent time on it and really emphazised that you belong in the program they will definitly see that.

That's great! Sounds like they do a good job of preparing you. Can't ask much more from a professor! Yeah, I did the same thing for my nursing prereqs. Printing out the PowerPoints definitely helped me feel more involved and on track. I have heard from posters in previous threads that recording is strongly recommended as well. I never recorded in my prereq classes, and looking back, I wish I did because nothing is better than hearing the material in the professor's own words. After all, they are the ones making the exams and preparing you. Thanks for the encouragement. I hope I do have a good chance. I spent a little over a month editing my essay. I had several nurses, including my mom review/edit it and then the writing center helped me out as well. I feel like I wrote a strong personal statement. I know the essay is a big area that can either make or break you, so I wanted to make sure I spent as much time as possible building it up. Hopefully it works out for all of us. Thanks for answering my questions! Good luck to you and I am glad the program is working out for you so far.

I'm glad you spent time preparing for your essay! I'm sure you will do great in the classes. Good luck to everyone and if you have any additional questions feel free to ask.

Hi @mely29 first of all thanks for sharing us everything about your experience especially being in the first semester of upper division it is sooo refreshing :). I,too, am waiting on the nursing programs reply and I have about a 3.8 GPA when it comes to prereqs but for general education I got a 3.65. All because I felt my science classes were way more important to be paid attention to than my AA degree classes. This is the result..I also volunteered 80+ hours at the oak hill hospital and am an ambassador at my local community college..I've also had a nurse look at my essay and correct me where needed also and I greatly appreciated her feedback she knew what the judges most likely expected/wanted. Anyway, I wanted to know how is the social life among the nurses studying in USF..do you guys become friends? Start hanging out and forming study groups? I feel like companionship is important among peers as we go through the rigorous program and I'd like to make new friends on the way :). Also are there nurses rooming together ? Sharing apartments and are there pool rides? And would you say it's impossible to work a part time job while studying in the program? Is it impossible ? Is the program impossible like you wanna break down and cry sometimes ? Lol this is stuff I hear and I'm sorry for the long response and questions but thanks for answering !! :)
