UM Accelerated BSN Program May 2011

U.S.A. Florida

Published

hi everybody! ive kinda been on and off stalking this forum for a little over a year and finally decided to join!:lol2:

heres my story...i applied into the may 2011 accelerated bsn program for UM, university of miami. i sent my application in dec 1 and transcripts dec 2nd. because i was currently enrolled in classes and because i took ONE college class in high school, my app was not considered for early decision even tho i submitted on the deadline date because all of my transcripts weren't in (a geology class which showed up on my bachelors transcripts and 6 credits worth of grad school). anyway, i have a BS from stony brook university in ny and have taken all of the nursing pre reqs except for chem, which i am currently enrolled in and UM is aware (she had me show her proof of enrollment to have my application stay in consideration). i have a 4.0 in the nursing pre reqs and a 3.52 on my bachelors (graduated cum laude)

the academic advisor told me that i wont hear back until march, but when reading through old discussions it looks like people received acceptance letters at all different types...how competitive is it to get in? do you think not having taken chemistry before would disqualify me? i am sooo nervous. i really want to get into this program and have heard soo many great things about UM.

i know alot of other schools have crazy wait lists, and some only accept the bare minimum amount of students. so im just wondering how many people are in the class and how competitive it really is. i also hope more than ANYTHING that i get in. what do you guys think?

Yeah UM is very picky , I had a similar situation but i applied in November so i was notified before the deadline to submit my dual enrollment transcripts and AP score reports. To be honest I think you just have to be a well rounded person. I did not have anywhere near your grades and I was accepted for Summer 2011. Summer is by far easier to get into by the way so I hope thats what you applied for ( 95 slots) vs 45 slots for the Fall. I believe they focus on your Pre requisite grades and Letters of Recommendation, and I dont think not taking chem would disqualify you, as long as you are currently enrolled. I really do think they are interested in the whole person not just grades as nursing is a compassionate profession. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to let me know.

Thank you for responding! If they focus on my pre req grades I should have no prob. Back in high school I struggled in sciences and excelled in English, and now it's flip flopping. Lol. I know you were early decision, but how long before you were accepted? Did you find out by phone call or letter ?

Hoping for some additional input and looking forward to hearing from more applicants. We should do like the prior class did and create a facebook student group!

I found out via my UM on the 23 by randomly checking it but saw my letter when i went back to college on the 5. It had been dated December 22. So within the month I found out as my documents were turned in on the 7th. Check my UM frequently. Call, go in person, do whatever you have to. I sent a ton of emails and called all the time checking up since I know how disorganized they are. I just hope they let you know by the end of Jan so you can apply to the scholarship because that tuition is no joke i tell you.

Omg I know. It's a killer. All the non private schools have waiting lists though and I heard um is a great school to go to for nursing. My counselor told me march!!!! I can't wait that long to find out. I live almost 2 hours away and work and go to school so it's be really hard to get there but I might just have to. My counselor probably hates me because I've emailed her about 50 times during this whole process. I'm afraid to keep on but I want to know....

Lol. I know what you mean. I am at UF right now and work PRN as a CNA as well up here in Gainesville. When you check my UM does it say that they are reviewing your application? If so then thats a good sign because I believe they would tell u by mid to late FEB. I dont know if you've heard of the HRSA nursing scholarship but it opens some time in feb/march and closes in may. If you have an EFC of 0, its definitely worth checking out if the UM scholarship dosen't work out. I hope you get in though :).. I applied to FAU as well and I have a feeling I probably wont get in and will be wait-listed as they accept 30-50 students each year. I just dont remember becoming a nurse so competitive, especially the way i see physicians treating them at my job!

myum does say application documents received and then when you click on it says it is in review. paco69 called today and they said the acceptance letters are going out in the mail this week and next, so im hoping ALL of ours are in that stack!!!!:yeah:

i agree. becoming a nurse is like a new fashion style now, making it soooo hard to get in. i hope you get into fau, but just to give you an insider tip...i went to class with a son of a person on the nursing board who had told him that the wait list was a year...but who knows? that might have been his way of trying to turn me away. LOL

i dont know what my fafsa results are going to be because my income DRASTICALLY changed and i will not be working during the program. also my fafsa was coded for grad student so i went in and changed it but need my w2's to complete. ugh, crossing fingers...lol

Eeh I don't know why it would be so long. They're application process is too simple so to say. Its all a numbers game, no insight to the real person. I just wanted to go there because its cheaper and to be close to my boyfriend as he will be completing an Accelerated MSF program at FIU. I really hope you get in :)... where are else are you applying to and if you do go to UM how do you plan to pay? That's my biggest obstacle right now :(

yeah i really dont understand why it takes so long..i applied to barry university and had a response within a couple of days. unfortunately, because i havent taken chemistry yet i wasnt able to start their program (which starts tomorrow!) its a shame because my entire tuition would have been covered and 15k of it would have been in scholarship and grant money.

my fiancee got his MSPT at FIU...great school. i love it there! i havent applied to any other schools just yet because i havent taken the TEAS or HESI. im waiting to see if i hear back from UM this week or next, and if i dont i am scheduling myself for the exam to apply to a few other schools..realisitcally, i dont know where i could apply beyond barry and um that would be commutable and feasible. i have family in wpb so the commute to miami wouldnt be too bad because i could stay there. on the other hand, if i go up north i dont have anybody i could crash with really:down:

honestly, i have NO idea how im going to pay...i have a friend going to a private school in NY for RN and she gets everything covered..there tuition is way higher and this is her 2nd BS...BUt she is doing a traditional program. once i know if im accepted i plan on applying for scholarships, as much FA as i can get, and talk to jupiter medical center and see if theyd be willing to help as well

I was accepted to UM's accelerated program without having completed chem. Check your my UM page - I found out I was accepted because I had to log in for financial information (I'm a former employee) and the acceptance letter was my welcome page.
