Miami Dade College Spring 2015 RN Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi all!

I wanted to start a thread for all of the Spring 2015 MDC RN applicants. I finally finished all of my pre-req's, and have started studying for the NLN PAX RN exam. I am hoping this thread, like many other MDC threads of the past, can help us all to build friendships, support one another, and most importantly, help us through this difficult process. Welcome! :)

Welcome :) same here I check my email everyday, I really hope I get ok what's ir gpa if you don't mind me asking.

Hi, yuremaa. I have 3.97 for both all and science GPA. But one thing got me frustrated..:( I have some of classes from international. I have been discussing with advisors about my transcript evaluation, but every one told me different..Hope they will accept my international credits.

I cant wait, but I dont want it to be a waste waiting time you know. Waiting for something that I dont know if I will get and that is frustating!!!

Good luck Lilian. BTW the other group used to sabotage the page everyday with messages. Since they started nursing school they haven't post anything. Image when we start. Lol.

Good morning to all. I also applied for generic program and Accelerated program to start in January 2015. Good luck to all and let's stay positive.

Let's all hope for the best.

2 and a half more weeks for October:)!!!!! then about two more weeks of agony to get our letters :banghead:

I try not to check this thread much; it makes me anxious !... And it's only September 13th (. Does anyone know how many students applied for the full time program? Do you guys have any idea or thoughts about the minimum GPA to get in this year? I heard they choose around 150 students is that right?

If I don't get in I will be applying in January as well but it would take too long; I'm not so happy about that. I also need to have a plan B....What r your other options? I mean where else will you apply ( what other colleges or universities)?.

MDC overall score calculation Spring 2015

So I have been trying to wrap my head around how MDC will use the new criteria to create an overall score. As most of you know, previous applicants had a math equation to help them get an overall score between the TEAS or the NLN Pax along with their Natural Science GPA. As of right now the new criteria for admission to MDC Nursing is 40% All Cum GPA and 60% Natural Science GPA so that equation does not apply for us, I was bored today at work and I was trying to figure out the calculations and I think I got it! so let me share with you.

First we need to find the maximum overall score that anybody can acquire.

MDC uses a 4.00 scale to weight GPA, so now that we know that, lets use a sample student.

In this example student "A" has a cum GPA of 4.00 and a Science GPA of 4.00

Lets start first with the Cum GPA, We know that the cum GPA weights 40% So for us to be able to multiply Student "A" 4.00 GPA we need to convert the percentage to a regular number ( divide 40% by 100 ) and you end up with 0.4

Now multiply 0.4 by the Cum GPA 4.00 and you get 1.6, We have now our first number let's move on to the natural science.

We know that the Natural Science GPA weights 60% so for us to be able to multiply Student "A" science 4.00 GPA we need to covert the percentage to a regular number ( divide 60% by 100 ) and you end up with 0.6., now multiply 0.6 by the science GPA 4.00 and you get 2.4

OK so now that both Student "A" GPA have been multiplied by their corresponding percentage we can add them up 2.4 + 1.6= 4.00

As you can see the scale can only go up to 4.00 so now we have our total overall score. Student "A" overall score is 4.00 on a 4.00 scale (4.00/4.00).

OK so now lets see another example with student "B", this time around student " B" scores will be lower.

Student "B" has an Cum GPA of 3.50 and Natural Science of 3.80 GPA

Cum GPA 3.5x0.4= 1.4

Science GPA 3.8x0.6= 2.28

1.4 + 2.28 = 3.68

Student "B" overall score is 3.68 on a 4.00 scale ( 3.68/4.00)

QUICKGUIDE

Multiply your All Cum GPA by 0.4 then multiply your science GPA by 0.6, after, add the answers and get your overall score!!

NOTES

Notice how I used 4.00 instead of 4.0, the reason is because if I go to my degree audit all my gpa's have 3 significant figures, for instance my All cum GPA is 3.60 and not 3.6 so I'm assuming MDC will use all 3 significant figures to make the decision.

Another thing that I noticed while doing random GPA calculations is that if your cum and science GPA are the same your overall score also stays the same, for example if you have a 3.80 and 3.80 your overall score will be 3.80/4.00

Please keep in mind that this was not officially released by MDC , instead i came to this conclusion using the information that was given by the website itself and the new criteria, this is just what made the most sense to me. the reason i wrote so much and in depth is because I didn't want to just throw a random math problem, I really wanted to show my thought process thoroughly so that everybody can judge and give feedback, I would really appreciate if anybody can take this to a math teacher and have them check it for error. I checked this a few time before posting and it just seems like a simple mathematical word problem.

I wish everybody good luck and remember that we don't know what other factors might be weighted into the acceptance decision. I really believe that everybody here will get in and I personally don't think there are more applicants because there is no test, advisers only receive the applications, it is really up to the nursing department to count, sort and accept students, if I learned something is that advisers will tell you anything to have you out of their office ASAP or at least that's what it feels like. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Thank you so much for take your time and post such important information. I am going to make my calculations right now. Thank you againg

Thank you Ferdre; I already did my math and mine would be 3.73. That's cause a class or two that I took years ago when I came to the states and didn't even know what I was doing; those advisors told me to take some classes that didn't do anything but lower my GPA. I just hope I get in now. Seriously, I am counting the days... I hope they do not take too long to send me that email ( if any). Imagine checking this threat seeing others getting the email and nothing from you lol that would be horrible ?

thanks again Ferdre for taking the time and explaining how that works !!! Hugs !

hey Oscar i read your previous message and yes it would be sad not to receive a letter, but even if we don't we must always keep our heads high and have a back up plan! :). if i dont get in i will work towards finishing my A.A and applying to FIU biochemistry B.A program, i also been thinking about getting my paramedic certification.

Another good option for nursing is Broward college, it has very similar pre req's than MDC and the program is offered 3 times a year and is about the same price, the only problem is that the program is considered to be a lot harder than MDC program and is also 1 semester longer if i remember correctly.

NOVA, BARRY and FIU also offer a great nursing program but they are extremely expensive.

btw those extra classes that you took might not even count towards your nursing, just to make sure go to your degree audit and enter your information, choose A.S and pick your nursing choice (Full-time, Part Time, accelerated or transitional) your degree audit will only show the classes that count towards your pre req's, your GPA may actually be higher than you think. i hope that helps.

I'm about to finish my AA too ) I just don't know where else to apply and I should be thinking about it already. Thanks for the tips I'll double check my GPA with that info you gave me ... Keep in touch ! Nice to meet you )
