MDC: Bought school supplies yet?

For the generic full-time nursing students that start this fall, It looks like we only have one "clinical" class. The course ID's may be misleading to me. I know that we have to have the whole uniform for clinicals. I don't know about everyone else, but my FNDMTLS NUR CLIN LAB doesn't start until 9/26/08. I guess thats so that we actually know a little bit about nursing before we have to perform nursing activities. I see on the schedule that we have FNDMTLS NUR SKLL LAB. Does that require any kind of uniform? I am assuming all other courses, we can where casual clothing. I usually don't buy my books/supplies until after I have gone to class so that I can be sure about what the teacher wants us to actually buy. But after orientation, I feel like I need to stock up now. I looked up the prices for the textbooks at the bookstore, and if I bought them all there, I would be paying: $636.90 before tax. I haven't even calculated how much the whole uniform is going to cost. Also, does anyone have any recommendations on stethoscopes? Do we need any other supplies besides steth, penlight, secondhand watch, scan trons, and regular school stuff? Thanks.

By the way, I'm anxious to start classes, and glad that I made it in the program. Hope we all do well.

Ok, so I basically found my answers from akspudus under "anyone starting RN at MDC this august?" But another kind of weird question: What are you supposed to wear under the white pants? I haven't bought mine yet, so I don't really know how they will look and feel. Thanks!

WEll....let me tell you. If you wear bright pink underwear under those pants....everybody is gonna know. Polka-dots can be kinda fun. Your basically going to be stuck wearing white underwear. As a guy...white boxers. As a girl.....well I'm sure you can figure something out. Just stay away from g-strings or t backs...or..lol...you get my drift.

As for the nursing uniforms. Make sure you check with Professor Ponce. She has a good supply of used uniforms for sale. Proceeds go to FNSA. If not, you will have to buy the top at the book store. Otherwise buy your pants at a place like allheart.com. Dickie's are nice. The fabric is better...especially since your going to have to iron those scrubs before clinical. Make them look nice.

Also, you are not going to find much in the way of used books for nursing school. Most of your books are going to be used through out school. Don't plan on selling them back. Also, you are going to want to make sure you have a "up to date" books...especially the drug guides and references. If you look at your book list, you will find a section for each class that refers to the mandatory text books for the class. YOU MUST HAVE THOSE. Remember your in nursing school, now is not the time to be cheap. Also, you are going to end up buying supplemental study materials. If you don't your a fool. When you have a week to read 10 chapters before a test...good luck unless you have supplemental study materials.

You are going to find nursing school quite different from prerequisite classes. I'll admit, I Aced some prerequisite classes without ever purchasing the text book. Not possible in nursing school.

I have probably purchased twice the number of books required by the book list.

lol...sorry about getting on the soapbox again folks.

Askpudus,

Thank you so much for your helpful info and insight. Let me know what you think. I bought most of my books through Amazon, but it seems I ordered the wrong Edition on the Fundamentals in Nursing (I got the 6th Edition instead of the 7th). Do you think I should hold on to it and see if I can use it for class?

Everything else has come in correctly and a little cheaper. Every penny counts.

Thanks again.

For Fundamentals you should be all right. It might be tough to cross reference your reading assignments. If you have an iPod, you can download chapter summaries for that textbook through iTunes. Very handy. I wish other publishers would do that.

I am soo glad they did your orientation so early. For us it was one week before classes started. They didn't give us any time to get our books off the Internet.

When you get care plan books...make sure they are up to date. NANDA changed a bunch of nursing diagnosis in 2007. Most of the professors haven't even caught up with it...but there are still a lot of books out there with the old NANDA's. You'll learn what NANDA is very soon...lol

Would you be able to share what the book list looks like?

I just want to get a general idea. Plus, they are still using the 7th edition of Nursing fundamentals? I just saw an 8th out, i hate that! It always means higher prices. grr

Hi Akspudus, you are like a celebrity on this site! I applied for the accelerated option for fall 2009 and we still haven't heard anything yet. This seems to be the longest wait compared to every other term. Have you heard anything about this year's class? Did you have a response by now, the year you applied? Do you have any advice? If I continue to study hard will it be a given to maintain my GPA, or is it tricky? Any idea why the advisors are so cautious about disclosing information?
