May 2014 Broward College

  1. 0 Ive posted before regarding the August program, but since they dropped those new ridiculous requirements (Mico in order to apply) back to the way it used to be (sorta, CHM isn't in our GPA anymore), I was wondering if there was anyone else looking to apply for May? If so, how are you preparing for the Hesi? I have horrible anxiety especially regarding the A&P section. I'm also taking my last pre-reqs which start tomorrow (eek) so wondering if it'll even be possible to apply for May in time. Any thoughts? Anyone?

Hey! I too will be applying for the May 2014 Entry. I'm still sort of confused about which prerequisites are factored into the GPA for admission. I know for sure they include at A&P 1 AND 2 w/ the labs, and ENC 1101 (english). but is the math and micro factored in too? I know they look at it and require it for completion of the program.. but is it actually included into the prerequisite GPA? I hope so because I got As in those two.
I don't think you can apply if your not done with all your pre-reqs, but don't quote me!! Try to call and ask and advisor.
For the HESI, I just bought the "Evolve Reach Admission Assessment (HESI A2)" study guide. I saw others recommend it. I just got it yesterday though so idk how well it works!! It reviews all sections and includes a practice test at the end, with explanations.

Have you or anyone heard any about any recent experiences at broward???? I've heard sooo many different things (go to this campus, that campus) and so many "horror stories" that it worries me. I have seen some very positive stories as well. I'm not going to let any of it stop me though. Any nursing school requires hard work & dedication.

Yes...they said you cannot apply until all pre reqs are completed. I guess micro can still be done during the program.

    Hi summer715
As far as the pre-reqs, neither the math or the Micro is factored into your GPA. They used to factor the Chemistry, but they stopped that which kinda sucks. I know I cant apply until my pre-reqs are done, I was wondering since classes end on the 5th of May, if I'd have time to still apply since the application no longer has a deadline. Its open ended until filled, but they don't specify the actual date the program will start.
I will be sure pick up the evolve manual then. I have one but it's an old version and i don't know what they could've changed.

As for Broward I have some friends that graduated both, I hear Central and North are the best campuses, and of course there are horror stories, but I think if we focus on what we have to do, and really buckle down, it wont matter what campus you go to. I'll call the Health Admissions tomorrow and ask about the deadline stuff.
On another note, I asked Broward about that new building under construction on the central campus and its gonna be this state of the art Nursing Facility for students , so awesome!

Hey guys I too am applying for the May 2014 semester...I have a 3.3 GPA in all my prereqs and I am so nervous to apply. I also am taking the Hesi for the first time this Friday and was wondering if anyone has any pointers before taking it. I have heard from friends that the vocab section was pretty difficult and a lot of the words in the study guide books are not on the test. I hope we all get in and I wish everyone luck!!!

Hi fernandesnicole15, I heard the same about the vocab. Ive seen on the site the mention of quizlet.com and that it was helpful for some people.

I'm not sure when the building will open they just told me to 'stay tuned'. I bet its gonna be awesome though, kinda like a mini hospital on campus.

As for me applying this May I called Central and North, and really couldnt get a straight answer from anyone. Im gonna visit the nursing department tomorrow at central. They arent very nice on the phone so im nervous as to what im gonna walk into.
Keep me posted on your journeys guys! And if were all at central maybe we can form some sorta hesi study group. Im not gonna take my test til next month some time though. Have to really study the A&P.

nursejackiern12 I have been studying a lot from quizlet and also from the McGraw Hill hesi book as well as the hesi book the bookstore provides. I have pretty much memorized everything in that book so I am praying that it is good enough to allow me to pass. I do not believe that the test is that hard I just think that the anxiety of taking a timed test is making me nervous. I will let everyone know how it goes on Friday and if we all get in we def need to form a study group ASAP.

Sounds like your ready to go fernandesnicole! Just breath and take Thursday off from studying. Do something fun to de-stress, then Friday before the test do a quick review of stuff you think is most difficult. That's what I usually do on tests.

I went to the nursing department today at Central (they were very sweet actually) and sadly the program starts on May 7th, so I wont be able to make it in time with my last pre-req ending on the 5th. SUCKS SOOO BAD! They told me not to worry because the summer is more intense because they cram 8 weeks of material into 6 (yikes!) but I still say its do-able. I'll be applying for August so if, excuse me WHEN you guys get in, be sure to tell me how its going. I know you'll be swamped but would love some insider tips on what to expect from our campus.

Chat with you guys later, good luck and kick some a$#!

I just took the HESI this morning! I know your not applying this semester but you'll still need to take it so I'll share my experience. I guess others can use it too.
For starters, I found it fairly easy. I got a 92% overall . The Evolve book (I put the link in an earlier post) is very good for preparation! I barely even spent much time studying. I read through the whole book, answered the questions and that was it. BUT that might not work for everyone!

Reading comp- got 86% - this portion is just like the Evolve book. If your from FL and you passed the FCAT you can pass this portion lol. It asks basic reading comprehension questions... Main idea, meaning of this word used in the passage, what conclusion can you draw, which statement is a fact, etc.

Grammar- got 92% - honestly I just used my common sense. This part was really easy for me, certain things just didnt sound right so I knew it was wrong. If your grammar is not on point don't worry, once again the Evolve book has pretty much everything you need to know.

Vocabulary- got 86% - ehh there were many words from the Evolve book, although several words took me by surprise. The Evolve book is pretty good preparation, but you may want to pick up a vocab book and review. If you have a good vocabulary, then I wouldn't stress it. I thought I wasn't going to pass this section but I ended up getting an 86%.

Anatomy and Physiology- got 96% - I love A&P and I'm fresh out of the course and labs. So that was a big help. The book isn't good enough preparation. Really I don't see how someone would be able to pass this section without taking the course. I would still use the book as initial review, but maybe something like A&P cliff notes or another review book would be needed. Once again, all I did was look over the Evolve book, but I have a very good background in Anatomy so that's why I did so well. It's such a broad subject. So make sure you brush up on your A&P!!

Math- got 100% - okay again, I'm good at math so it was easy for me (I'm a math/science person) shows through my scores lol. Nonetheless this was an easy section. It is BASIC math. Really. Basic. Lol. +/- and multip.& division of decimal numbers, fractions, conversions, percentages, ratios etc. the Evolve book is GREAT preparation! You don't need anything else.

So buy the EVOLVE study guide, study and don't stress it! It's not a bad exam. I promise I barely even studied!
