Fall 2014 SSC/UCF Concurrent Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Alright, I know it's early but...who is planning on applying to the Fall 2014 SSC/UCF Concurrent program? I just finished my prerequisites today and I'm so excited to get going. I am planning on taking the TEAS for the first time in January so hopefully I'll do well.

One question I have is what should I do during the spring semester? I completed my AA degree as of today but unfortunately, my family kind of relies on my FA money to get by. I'm wondering if there is an AS degree I can enroll in so that I'm still eligible for FA until the nursing program starts. I saw something for Health Information Technology that might work. Anyway, just thought I'd see who else is applying and if anyone else is in the same financial situation as me.

I hope to get to know some of you soon!

Well, I decided to take some classes for the Health Information Technology AS degree. I figured it would make sense to work on something else just in case I don't get in to the Concurrent program on the first try.

There is a limit to the financial aid monies you are eligible for...the cap is like 92 credit hours or something. They cut some people off during the nursing program when they went over 100, despite appeals. This was mostly for grants though.

For loans there's a cap of $57,000 I believe that you can take out. Not all are subsidized.

Why not try to take CNA classes and start working go the next year?

I'll have to look at everything to see if I'm at risk for going over. As of now I have only taken classes that were required for my AA and this is my first time in college so hopefully I'll be okay. I am nowhere near $57,000 in loans though so I know I'm in the clear for that. Wouldn't a bachelor's degree require over 100 hours? That kind of stinks that people that are following their educational plans wouldn't be eligible for grants anymore. I'll have to look into it more.

As far as CNA classes go, from what I have heard they really don't make that much money and as much as I would like to get the experience under my belt, my waitressing job that I have right now is keeping my family afloat. It would be hard to give that up and take a cut in pay.

So how are you guys keeping from going crazy about the wait? I just wish that we could apply now

Financial aid for a Bachelor's degree is up to 120 hours for Bright Futures, and I think 112 for Pell Grant. I might be off on my numbers, but typically these students are eligible for an appeal that says they have x hours remaining.

The tricky issue is that your financial aid will be through Seminole State and not UCF. So you might cap out on hours for a community college while not being a bachelor's degree.

My concern for you is, what if you don't get into the program after you finish this other degree? Are you just going to keep getting associate degrees until you get into the nursing program? Seminole State has been really cracking down on appeals for additional financial aid. I went into the nursing program with my AA, and during the program I filed appeals twice, the second time they said it was the final appeal for any additional monies as this would be my second associates degree.

Another issue is because SSC takes into account your UCF credits (special only for nursing students I am told), they adjust your financial aid award based on credit hours, which start to tack on additional hours to your financial aid award.

Talk to the financial aid counselor for nursing and ask what your best options are regarding continuing to receive aid. She was very informative for me and helped me through my appeals.

I am keeping busy studying for the TEAS and I've been working a lot more than usual so I haven't gone crazy yet.

I would like to hear from the group of students that are starting the Spring 2014 program. I'd love to know what their GPAs and TEAS scores were. I've looked at older threads but haven't seen much when it comes to that.

YorkieMomRN - Thank you for all the information. I hope I'm not fooling myself but I feel I have a pretty good chance of getting into the program, definitely before I finish a second associates degree. If anything, my problem will be that other applicants will have finished their prerequisites before me. I will definitely speak with the FA counselor to see what my best options will be. The advisors at SSC weren't helpful at all so I would appreciate some sort of guidance. Thanks again!

Hey there guys! i am also applying for the concurrent program!

Finished my AA degree since May 2013 and already completed my TEAS V test so just waiting on the school.. Are you guys applying anywhere else?

Hey! I'll be applying to Seminole as well. I'm so worried, I have great pre-requisite gpas and my teas score is in the 90s but my gpa is really low :(

When I took my BLS class with Florida Hospital there were two spring students in my class. One was in the accelerated program and she said she had a 3.2 GPA and 84 TEAS, the other was in the regular program and I believe he said his gpa was a 3.6.

I wish the application window was sooner. It is going to be a long few months..
