Change to License Requirements???

U.S.A. Florida

Published

My school sent out a memo today saying that the Florida Board of Nursing has changed its rules - in order to sit for your license you must be criminal free for 15 years on a level 1 background check. This is a change from the case by case basis.

Just wondered if anyone else has heard this news. It effects a few girls in my class and they were told to drop out of the program. Needless to say there were some on year 2 that were in the same boat. Sure I know that it was always risky - because the board could turn you down - but this is incredible.

Love to hear what others have heard.

Bill HB 449 (or also known as CS/SB 146 I believeor the Jim King keep Florida working act) is suppose to give ex-offenders the possibility of getting their occupational licenses back if the boards see fit. You can look it up on the House of Representatives website and you can look up the bill and print it out. http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=45276&SessionId=66 I am still not sure what it means. I have written to all the people who sponsored and co sponsored the bill. I heard back from 2 and still have no idea if this bill will help my daughter get her nursing license back. It is suppose to go into effect January 2012. I hope this helps.

GENERAL BILL by Government Operations Subcommittee and Taylor and Rouson (CO-SPONSORS) Campbell; Reed; Rogers; StaffordCriminal Justice: Designates act "Jim King Keep Florida Working Act"; provides legislative intent; requires state agencies to prepare reports that identify & evaluate restrictions on licensing & employment for ex-offenders; prohibits state agencies from denying application for license, permit, certificate, or employment based solely on person's lack of civil rights; provides exception.

Thank you so much,i am nursing student and i hope this bill will help me....we will see.

Good lack ,with your love one.We all need a little break...lol.

I hope so but if you have any type of felony on your record they will let you go thru the whole schooling and then tell you no. The State of Florida is terrible. Only one other state has this law. I spoke to one of the representatives that sponsored the HB 449 and she told me she has heard from several nurses and she thinks the law that prevents nurses from keeping their license is too stiff. She is going to try to change it but it will take a long time. My family may move out of state because of this. It is a shame that a doctor who spent 3 years in jail for committing rape can get his medical license back but a nurse who was between jobs and did a stupid think by kiting is ban from practicing. It is ridiculous. She paid her dues, there was no restitution to be made, no money taken but she can't practice. It is a disgrace that the BON and the Florida Dept of Health aren't treating the drug addict or sexual predator as harsh as a check kiter. Shame on them.

Well we see,my case is sealed, and i have adjudication withheld, so maybe, is a hope.If not, i have to move, but i dont now were.Do you now, in witch state, i can sit for enclex.

My daughter had adjudication withheld also but hers was not sealed. You might be ok if it is sealed but not sure. Most states don't have this law. Only Florida and I think one other state has it. So I would say try other states. We are going to try Texas. I think NC is ok too Georgia will go along with Florida. Good Luck! You can still take your nclex from what I understand. Then you can go anywhere nationwide after that if FL won't give you a license.

Thank you so much, and i wish you ,and your daughter all the best!!!!

Don't tel GOD,haw big is your problem, tel your problem haw big is your GOD.

Thank you and good luck to you. God is a big constant in our lives and he has a plan. I am just waiting to see it!:)

Does this mean we can re-apply for our FL license???

I would like to know if this is real because i was denied to take the nclex last year my classmates have taken it i was the only one out of 47 students denied to take the exam due to this law it has been 12 years passed since the felony it was ajudicated no convictions this is truly unfair.I am a lil excited to read this news but can anybody tell me that this is confirmed.

They changed the law!!!! Govorner Scott signed it and it goes into effect July 1st. 2012! Here is the link! Good luck!
