Next move? Internal Med vs Psych

Hello,

I'm currently a new graduate and in my first year of nursing. I'm currently working as a float through our physicians clinic. However, I'm looking to make a move into a permanent position. My options are psych and internal medicine/oncology. I have floated a few times to Psych and have really enjoyed it. The downside is there's no real patient care in it as it is pretty much triage and prior authorizations with an occasional injection. I haven't worked in the open position in internal medicine but will be this week. I'm scared I'm not going to enjoy it as much. But I also don't want to limit myself in the future by taking the psych position. I would appreciate any input. Thank you!

As you no doubt know, general medicine or surgery floors are great places to get started. You build basic nursing skills while learning what aspects of nursing you love and which you don't. You meet many providers, learn about a many different disease processes and medications and gain a great foundation for your future nursing practice.

If you like psych, and you know you want to stay in psych, take the psych job. But if you're not sure and you think you might want to do some other sort of specialty it's worth investing some time in medicine or surgery or Med/Surg.
