Just got a new grad job!!

Hi guys!

I'm graduating next week, and just got my first job! So, after 150 applications to hospitals within a 60 mile radius of Atlanta, GA, I have not gotten one call back. I decided to start applying out of state. I applied to jobs in Texas and Oklahoma because those areas seem to have the most promise. After 8 applications in Tulsa, I had 3 interviews and got 3 job offers. I decided to take a job on a medical cardiopulmonary floor. They do telemetry, care for all kinds of cardiac patients as well as renal failure patients and post-kidney transplants. They also have drips and vents, and do hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. I also got $7000 to pay off student loans for a 2 year commitment. Just thought I'd share that there are places hiring new grads. Wish me luck!!!

Hi Pinksunflower, no I don't have my license yet. I'm graduating on Thursday. I just didn't want to be sitting around after I'd passed the boards with no job like so many people are having to do, so I decided to be proactive. Now I need to start studying!

Nascent, I sent out the same resume and cover letter to the out of state positions. I was really thinking that I may have needed to revise my resume because I hadn't gotten any calls, but after applying out of state, I knew it was fine. I'm sure yours is too.

When the nurse recruiter called me, she actually asked me why I wanted a job in Tulsa when I was living in Atlanta. I told her that I had turned in many, many applications, but hadn't had any luck and was willing to move to start my career. Tulsa was a choice for me because my husband was also able to relocate there. I think if they call you, and you just tell them what's been going on, they'll accept that. I probably won't have my license for 3 months, and they're waiting for me. So, if you let them know what's been going on, and that you're willing to transfer your license to their state, I'm sure it'll be fine with them.

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Something will come up soon. Good luck to you!! :heartbeat

Thank you for your response. It's good to hear they were receptive. I was just thinking of perhaps contacting the Board of Nursing in various states I am applying to and then mentioning this somehow in the cover letter. I'm going to try to apply in Tulsa myself and pretty much everywhere else. I hear that nurses are really in demand in Tusla, although interestingly a quick Job Search on monster does not turn up much. Were did you look? And just out of curiosity, were the call backs you got from postings that mentioned welcoming new grads or did they require more experience but call you anyway? Thank you, again.

JenRN30,

congratulations finding a job.

I will graduate in May 201o. Same situation here as it seems to be in other places: hospitals are not hiring. I am in the fortunate position that I can move, and I will. A couple of students who graduated from my program last year have not found jobs yet. But if you ask them (those I know personally) it is either that they can not move or just never applied out state.

We DO have a nursing shortage. And there ARE jobs out there. So what if you can not find a job right next door in the specialty you dream of? There is almost NO area of studies where you will be guaranteed to find a job anywhere. Most people would still be happy if their situation was a good as it is even now in nursing.

Posts like yours should be a sticky on top ofd this forum. I am just really opposed to rehash the bad news, wine, complain, be afraid.... tha does not help! I do not even listen to teachers who tell me there are no jobs in this area. Unless they tell me in the next sentence what I can do, I am not interested.

My advice for all who get discouraged by what you read here about not finding jobs is: stay positive, try everywhere you can if possible and use all your chances and resources. This situation is caused primarily by economic conditions and it WILL pass too.
