Its been a year in my one job, a new opportunity knocks

Nurses New Nurse

I've been working full time on 3rd shift at a SNF/LTC for a year now and I know its time for me to move on, but deep down I sort of do not want to go.

The facility I work in is no cake walk and can get difficult. Working 3rd shift doesn't do favors to my social life as well. However, I'm well liked at my work and the nurses there treat me like family and all want me to move to the hospital.

I've been looking for hospital jobs and my mother gave me a lead, she said a director at a medical surgical/tele unit would be waiting for my application. However the catch was it's only part time 48 hour pay period, and when I calculated it I would take quite the hit in my monthly pay (basically student loan payment). I have 3 months worth of my salary saved up but I intended to use it only if the crap hit the fan/graduate school. The hospital would also treat me as a new grad so I would supposedly be oriented like if I knew nothing, which is pretty good.

My eventual goal is to be either in Administration or Advanced Practice so hospital experience is vital for graduate school requirements. I'm extremely hesitant to take the job because I would sacrifice a stable job, higher pay, and coworkers that are pleasant.

I know I need to advance my career but I have some misgivings about this. Can someone just give me some encouragement on the matter? I really want to erase these doubts before the possibility of being interviewed.

If you've got an opportunity to get into the hospital, take it! Most here on allnurses will tell you those are hard to come by. Can you go per diem at the nursing home? If you are a valued employee, they won't want to lose you and may go for that.

Perhaps you might be able to stay PRN at your current job while working the part time hospital job (If you get an offer). Another option for you is to stay at your current job while you search for a hospital job that is full time.

Thirding the "take the hospital job and go PRN" idea

also your new job may help pay off student loans as well as have tuition assistance for anything you take while an employee there..
