Anyone part time GN?

Nurses New Nurse

Is anyone working part time as a GN? How is it working out? I am an evening/weekend nursing student and I am working full time as a public school teacher. I am thinking about keeping the teaching job and working part time as a nurse summers and every other weekend; maybe holidays; I'm not sure if it is possible to do that, especially if full time orientations are required with a preceptor. Is there such a thing as an orientation for part timers?:specs:

Hi, Lesli. I am a new grad-LPN in WI. For my orientation, which begins on 6/26 and will last 4-6 weeks, I was told I had to work full-time, including the week of my Boards(which are on a Saturday). I will be doing my orientation on the Med-Surg unit at the hospital I have worked at for the past 2+ years. Anyways, hope this helps.

Specializes in Cardiac.

Maybe you can find some place that is willing to give you part time, but usually they require new nurses to be full time. At least, that's how I understood it.

I'm a new grad nurse and will be working part-time (per diem) after orientation. My boss is super flexible and will even let me do my orientation pt if I want to, but I'm going to go ft just to get it done this summer b4 dh starts school. Anyways, I think it's possible if you just find someone willing to work with you and lay all your cards out on the table right away so you both know the situation. We are in desperate NEED of nurses, so I've noticed hospitals are willing to work w/ just about any schedule. HTH!

Thanks for the info... Maybe I can do orientation full time over the summer, then switch to part time. I have a few years to decide!
