Did I make a big mistake?

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

I just interviewed for an LPN position with St. Mary's Health Systems in Grand Rapids. During the interview, while discussing educational goals, the hiring manager informed me that St. Mary's doesn't typically hire RNs with an Excelsior degree. Have any Excelsior grads encountered problems with getting hired? I'm currently located in Michigan but possibly relocating to North Carolina in the future. Is there a way to get clinical hours to supplement an Excelsior degree? I knew this would be a potential problem but hearing it first hand from a major hospital has me worried. I just enrolled at Excelsior, and trust me when I say I did a ton of research. .. but did I make a huge mistake?

I worked with several nurses who where excelsior grads and they had excellent clinical skills some better than nurses who attended brick and mortar schools

Me neither, except out of curiosity, or when making small talk. After all, does it matter? In the end, we all have to be able to pass the same state test.

Of all the States, I would expect that California will be the hardest on EC grads. From all I've read here (and elsewhere) it can vary state by state, region by region, and even employers as to an EC grad's employability.
