Hi. I am an Registered Nurse (almost 7yrs) as well as a Licensed Massage Therapist (14yrs). I am preparing to open my own wellness clinic in my area (Iowa). I've contacted NANMT (National Association of Nurse Massage Therapists) for guidance/info in Nurse Massage Therapists area of specialty (for scope of practice, etc) and to also become a member, however found that they are right now inactive but are regrouping currently.

I have researched & educated myself on the ins/outs of insurance billing, as I will be able to bill insurance. Business wise, I also have a business/accounting education/background and owned a private practice as an LMT (before I became an RN), so I pretty much have that aspect covered.

I am getting close to opening date (should be late December early Jan), and with that nearing I am curious to see if there are any practicing RN-LMTs that also have their own clinics/centers? And if so, how is it going and do you have any advice and or words of wisdom to share...?

Hi there, I've been a licensed RN since 07' but my clinical practice has been sporadic for many reasons. One of the major reasons being that I do not feel like we use holistic methods. That being said, I have recently enrolled in a Massage Therapy course and I am very excited to REALLY begin using my hands for healing rather than passing meds and filling out paperwork. I too have looked into the NANMT and found that they are currently not accepting memberships. Do you have any further information as to when they may actually be back up and running. Also, it is very interesting to hear that you are opening your own wellness clinic, could you elaborate on what services you will be offering? I would like to incorporate both in my future, but it is actually hard to find jobs that are specifically for Registered Nurse Massage Therapists. Would you have any advice on future job options where I could possibly "wear both hats" instead of keeping them separate. Thanks for your post, it is nice to know that there are others out there!

Hi...sorry it took so long to answer. Services I plan to offer include several different massage types, such as: Deep Tissue, Swedish (of course), Cupping, Thai Yoga Massage, Thai Medicine Ball massage...just to name a few. As an RN I have no problem with contacting and consulting with a client's primary health care provider, in order to create a care plan/recovery plan as a team approach. I also plan to do home visits for Elderly/Shut In type of clients that cannot easily travel. I also hope to provide massage therapy for nursing home and hospice clients as well.

As NANMT, I gave up. I had reached the person in charge, but then never heard back from them...? It seems they are and or will no longer be an actual group/association...? Therefore, I decided to pursue the Holistic Nursing membership and will work toward get my certification within Holistic Nursing instead as I believe that will better complement my Massage Therapy better in the long run. =)
