Whats your biggest pet peeve working in the ED?

Id have to say my biggest pet peeve is when someone hands you a medicaid card as they pull it from their Louis Vuitton handbag with bling on their hands after having rolled up to the ER in their Mercedes Benz! After that I'd say when someone comes to the ER for a UPT. Dont they know they are available at the dollar store now adays?

Then consider the fact that nurses sometimes need to vent in a safe space with folks who understand what we're going through to be your lesson of the day. You are welcome to participate, but perhaps you should tread lightly on judging us for behavior that you have no basis to understand yet.

1) You are comparing three entirely different things, three entirely different sensations.

2) You dont stop blood flow with tattoos or piercings.

3) You don't draw tubes of blood or put anything directly into the bloodstream with tattoos or piercings.

4) Half the time I get a nurse that pokes me at least 5 times before they get a vein, half the time they have to poke me somewhere on my hand instead after poking me several times on my arm.

5) My guess is you dont have any tattoos or piercings.

Not sure if you know but getting a tattoo takes longer than getting an IV or your blood drawn. I have piercing and 2 tattoos. I also have had IV's and blood drawn. Guess which one hurt the most?

I am on these forums for learning purposes. I don't need to be a nurse in order to let someone know they are incorrect about something. If people bother you so much, you hate it when people whine, then maybe you're in the wrong profession. I find it puzzling when nurses are insensitive to even the most reasonable things. I understand everyone elses frustrations because those are all ridiculous things, things that would probably frustrate me too if I was a nurse. However, why judge someone by appearance and say they shouldn't whine because of it?

Would a mod care to point me to the rules? Is this a nurses-only forums? Maybe I missed the memo.

You really don't get that this is for nurses? Really? Since you're a pre-nursing student why don't you go to the student part of the board where people haven't had to actually deal with patients who can't act like grown ups. And no one is judging anyone by their appearance, they are just saying if you have quite a few tattoos and piercings, whining that you don't like needles is bs. And this is where NURSES come to vent about annoying things, cause we are professionals and don't take it out on our patients. If you ever become a nurse you may understand that.

Well, since you haven't "physiucally experienced" taking care of adult patients who behave like children and slow down your flow in taking care of ALL your patients, maybe a "pet peeve" thread isn't something you can relate to yet. And I'm guessing all of the nurses posting here have been patients at some point in the past, so you don't really have a perspective that we don't. As nurses though, we DO have a perspective and body of experience that you have not yet had.

I was responding to the statement I quoted. I understand nurses have patients to attend, however why should it matter if a patient whines about getting blood or iv withdrawn? You are not that patient, you do not know their personal experiences.

Because when I have someone stalling or flinching when I try to start and IV, or doing some BS drama about "maybe I don't want to consent to the IV so explain to me in detail again why I need it even though we've already been over this" it takes longer than it should, and that takes time away from the many, many other tasks I have at hand. Also, it's annoying, and THIS IS A THREAD ABOUT PET PEEVES. It's in the title. Should the thread include a definition of what a pet peeve is?

Because it's incongruent for someone to complain about an IV when they have voluntarily had needles plied to their bodies over and over again.

I never mentioned anything about needles on my post. This is about sensation. My blood sugar seems to drops everytime I get blood withdrawn, so I pass out. I do not pass out by getting pierced or tattooed. What's so difficult to understand?

What's so difficult to understand?

It's difficult to understand why you feel the need, as a nursing student, to police our vent thread and tell us what it is appropriate for us, working professionals, to vent about.

The irony of this exchange is that "nursing students judging nurses for venting" often comes up as a pet peeve on the general forum. I think there are whole threads about this topic.

What's so difficult to understand?

The fact that you are bashing nurses who are venting in a vent thread. Especially since you want to become a nurse and that you come here to learn. So learn to let people vent. If you don't like what is being posted on the nurse threads then stay in the pre nursing threads. Our jobs are extremely stressful and to have someone say something negative on a nursing board who isn't a nurse rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Tattoos, piercings, IVs, and blood draws done to me. No problem with any of them.

As an emergency nurse? 99% of my pediatric patients under 10 handle IVs and blood draws. Adults are 50/50. Adults who whine about IVs or blood draws are definitely a big pet peeve for me.

If expressing the difference between tattoos and piercings, IV's and blood withdrawals is considering bashing, I honestly don't even know what to tell you.

So this wasn't a passive aggressive statement that you made? You weren't trying to ruffle any feathers telling people they shouldn't be a nurse?

And considering I have experienced all three "sensations" it does bother me when people whine about getting an IV. That is one of many pet peeves I have along with a whole lot more.

Oh and I forgot to add. I suffer from hypoglycemia and make sure I have the appropriate meds or a snack to help combat a drop in my blood sugar.
