I am an undergraduate seriously considering becoming a RN - would especially like to work in the ER. I know the ER isn't always what it is cracked up to be, but I think I might really enjoy it. I could just use some first-hand advise on what it takes to become and be a RN - specifically in the ER. Good or bad, I would just like some different opions on this and on actual nursing school. Any information would be VERY helpful and appreciated. Thanks!!

Christiane

I just graduated from nursing school with my RN. I can't tell you what working will be llike but I can tell you what nursing school is like. I went to an associated program (community college) and must say our school turned us out with more experience than some of the 4-year programs aroung here. No matter what school, you learn text book. In life after school you learn the real world. Hopefully school gave you the foundation but 90% is hands on after school. I have worked in an ER as a CNA for 2 years, er is my passion and I'd love to go right in. However, i am meeting a ton resistance to new grads in the er, mostly by er RNs. I don't agree with this (go to the new grad/preceptor topic under ER in this section). My mom has been a RN in the Er for 20+ years, she loves it (but it all depends on your staffing and administrative support). Hope that answers some of your questions.

Christine - School is rough, in some places. Other schools are not to bad, but those students seem to lack a lot of info considered common knowledge.

I went tino the ER right out of school and had no problems with it. I was also told that I exceeded expectations by the staff, and some of the docs. I think it is a matter of catching on quickly. I have worked in the ER for 3 years now, and have my ACLS, PALS, TNCC, MICN, and CEN.

We have hired some new people over the last year. They do good, but admit to having a hard time with it. They also had experience before coming to the ER.

The bottom line is that everyone is different. The only way to find out is go for it.
